Most executives are coping relatively well with the demands and effects of the economic crisis, but people problems loom on the horizon.
Executives around the world are working longer hours, taking on additional responsibilities, and experiencing higher levels of stress as they struggle to address the economic downturn, according to a McKinsey Quarterly survey.
From the C-level to middle management, executives are working more hours now than they did before the crisis began, but most say they’re coping: almost 20 percent say their levels of physical and mental stress have not changed at all, and more than 50 percent say stress levels have increased but are manageable in the long term.
However, middle managers have greater levels of stress than more senior executives do: many more say they are worried about coping with their increased stress, and only 36 percent of them say they are very or extremely likely to stay with their current employers two years from now, compared with 52 percent of all executives who responded.
The survey also asked where executives are spending their extra time, how satisfied they are with their own—and their superiors’—performance, and how prepared they felt to address the crisis and why.
