Spock FAQ: Some new features of Spock platform- trust, messages, personal and tag-search widgets!

Since today some new and very nice features are available on Spock- it's first of all TRUST, the new way to connect with your trusted contacts on Spock. Then it's the possibility to send messages (communicate!) to another Spock users, and ... I found that Favorites have disappeared! Now the "Trusted" are there. However some kind of old favorites is still accessible in this way.

Jay comments this as a very significant step towards social communication for Spock nodes! And adds that the challenge with favorites was that people wanted to communicate with their favorites, and you could not do that in the previous design. We hope that people will like the feature a lot since it allows you to communicate and share contact information.

Spock Team is gonna send out a message about all this in the morning and will publish the info on their blog.

I am one of Spock fans and evangelists, so I am very happy with the way where it's going to! good luck to Spock ;)

UPDATE OF 18/10/2007:

Today it's already available a more structured new feature presentation from Spoke (found it in a Users Group). Enjoy!

1. Messaging - We implemented simple messaging on Spock. So, once you
find who you are looking for, if they are a valid Spock user, you can
send a message to them. The big difference here is that the message
will go directly to their email address and not to some "inbox" in
Spock.  All messages sent via Spock go directly to your email
account.  Eventually in the future, that message could go directly to
your preferred Social Network, or even to your cell phone as a text
message. This feature is being implemented since users said that once
they found the right person on Spock, they had no way of contacting
them or sending them a simple message.

2. Trust Network - Users have demanded that we overhaul the
"favorites" in Spock and make it more useful. Now, you can add people
to your trust network and share contact information with them.  So, if
I wanted my 1,500 contacts to always be able to reach me via email or
know my latest cell number or IM address, they can just look in
Spock.   I can decide who I share this information with in my
settings. Again, this was driven by user request as they said that
while we organize their public presense on Spock, why not allow them
to organize all of their fragmented communiction tools in Spock as
well.  So, regardless if you use GMAil, Meebo, Yahoo, Facebook, etc,
we will allow you to organize it all in Spock and share that with the
people you trust.  Again, this is in line with our goal of organizing
information around people and taking fragmented information and making
it organized.  We are not building out any of these communication
tools, we are just allowing you to organize and share them easily.  We
will even make it possible for people you trust to know if you are
online on any of your IM clients at any time!

If you have a lot of favorites you may be wondering what happened to
them - dont worry.  If you click in "Trusted" and look at the right
side, you will see a link called "people you migth want to add" - this
is your favorites list.. An easy way for you to see them and invite
them to Trust you on Spock.

  1. Hi Andrey,

This is Maia, from Spock. Thanks for the blog post! There's another feature we released yesterday that you might have missed. We now have flash widgets that bloggers can put in their sidebar. You can search for any term, and click "Widget" to make a widget out of it. For example, here is the widget for "website founder". http://www.spock.com/do/search/widget?query=website-founder
Let me know what you think, or if you come up with any cool searches to use the widget for!

  2. Maia is here, Maia is there!
Here is the Queen of the Spock Empire, in my Blog!- it's such a pleasure for me ;)

In fact I've found Widget and it's very clear what that should do. It's quite a standard for 2.0 world feature, right? I am glad Spock also has Widget!

It's true that I did not check by myself this feature from Spock, since I ALWAYS have flash-played disabled in my environment (I hate flash technology- just added an appropriate tag to my Spock profile ).

But I am sure the most other Spock users will love this feature.
I am "marked"- I hate cartoons on the Web therefore flash won't work for me... plz do not take it personally!

and good luck to Spock Team with another new great features of your Platform!

  3. btw, I've checked the widget and it seems to be working just fine. What's the relation with flash? or by flash you meant "object that's flashing"?

here is my widget as I see it w/o flash-player enabled:

  4. Hi Andrey,

That's our individual search result widget, which is in JavaScript ;)

  5. That's true, Maia, I was looking at my personal Widget, not the one about Search on Spock...

Now I've checked also that from Search by Tags, and found it works fine, even if still must to be tuned to be more precise.

Here is what I've got for Milan-IN tag on Spock from the JavaScript version of Widget-

as usual, some "strange" ;) Milan, IN, USA people is there... But we're used to meet these search results also from Google.

And the Flash version of Widget looks really cool- the people's faces changing with the most valuable Web links about them- COMPLIMENTS to Spock Team!

So I'll be monitoring time to time this Milan-IN/ Spock Widget page, in order to discover the new Milan-INers on Spock ;) And it could be also a good idea to put somewhere in a corner od Milan-IN Member's Profile interface the personal Widget on Spock, like this one of myself.

...As we've once done it with the Google Ads for Milan-IN Members.

  7. I saw there are some nice fruits in this search results ;)
that's why I told "it's not perfect", their widget, must be tuned for sure.

btw that would be really cool to have Mr. Silvio among Milan-IN Members, even virtually, do not you think so? ;)

So if the people-visitors of our Web Site, will trust that Spock Widget- they may believe Silvio Berlusconi is one of us?!

so let's put immediately the widget to our Home Page! J/K naturally.
