OpenSocial, Google’s Open Answer to Facebook

It's a very, very good news for us 2.0 people: Google has finally presented to public their OpenSocial platform!

and also we at MVNO.it will take it into consideration immediately- It's much better having such kind of social middle-ware than to connect to each and every platform one by one, although I do not know why several people see this in the concurrency with Facebook that's a very different thing from my point of view... however ;)

Here is the news, via GigaOM (Om Malik)-

Google’s (GOOG) much awaited answer to Facebook ecosystem is finally coming to light. The existence of this Google platform was first reported by TechCrunch and is going to become official tomorrow.

Google will announce its new social networking initiative, Open Social on Thursday. Joining Google and its Orkut social network are other partners such as XING, Friendster, hi5, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Newsgator and Ning.

OpenSocial is a set of common APIs for building social applications on the web. These common APIs mean that developers only have to learn once in order to start building social applications for multiple websites, and any website will be able to implement OpenSocial and host social applications.

OpenSocial attacks Facebook where it is the weakest (and the strongest): its quintessential closed nature. Several Facebook developers have groused that a special Facebook-only mark-up language makes the task of writing Facebook apps tougher. (Recommended reading: Anil Dash on the historical limitations of proprietary development platforms.)

Google has managed to attract some of the key Facebook app companies Flikster, Rock You, Slide, and iLike to work with them on OpenSocial. The lure of expanding their widget base to other Social platforms such as hi5 and XING, perhaps was too hard for them to resist.

Even if you take Facebook out of the equation, the task of writing and adapting widgets for the every increasing number of social platforms was going to be turn into a colossal mess. OpenSocial looks to address some of those issues. This is a mild negative for start-ups who are offering middleware services around widgets.

Keywords: Facebook, Friendster, LinkedIn, Newsgator, Ning, OpenSocial, Orkut, Plaxo, hi5, social network, Google, XING

  2. Hello Liz,
I trust your opinion, but it's strange that the same complete list (XING, Friendster, hi5, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Newsgator and Ning) is presented also in all (most?) other Google's communications and Web authors articles/ blogs...
what's exactly wrong wrong here? It would be great to know that!

    - XING
    - Friendster
    - hi5
    - LinkedIn
    - Plaxo
    - Newsgator
    - Ning

btw, I can bet that OpenSocial won't be supporting also Spock ;) but plz do not ask me why- you should learn Spock better by yourself and will understand the reason! ;)

  3. Hi Andrey,

VIADEO and Salesforces have been invited to Mountain View to present their applications yesterday...Xing was not invited as they are not part of the first key partners!
I guess it's fair to give a complete list to the readers, that's why I wanted to let you know :-)

Should you want to view the Viadeo's demo that has been presented on stage yesterday by Dan Serfaty, please click on this link:

    Tks!

  5. OK, now it's all clear about the list, I am very happy to know that Viadeo is also included!

it's important strategically for my another project- MVNO.it, we are looking to connect 2.0 services to Mobile... and having such middle-ware partner as Google/OpenSocial looks very promising! ;)

about the demo of Viadeo- yes! I've seen it already, nice job guys, REALLY well done!

It's just today Julie Laurent (International marketing Coordinator, Viadeo) has invited me to the new Hub on Viadeo dedicated to OpenSocual platform, btw created by Peter Cunningham (Country Manager Viadeo UK).

From the latest updates of Peter in this Hub of Viadeo, there was Google Video of the OpenSocial Launch. It's really amazing!
