Evolution of Social Media in Corporations and what they should know

(Jeremiah Owyang is my favourite Web Strategist and Blogger...)

Evolution of Social Media in Corporations and what they should know

I answer these questions very frequently, and I encourage our customers to read my blog, here’s an attempt in mass education.

What every corporation should know by the end of 2007:

1) What is social media, and how does it impact their company
2) Social Media is here to stay, it’s not going anywhere, look at the next generation or workers, they are highly connected
3) You’re not in control: Let go/give away to gain more (Update: this really works)
4) Social Media is an overlay for all marketing and announcement activities
5) Some companies are appointing official roles (Community Manager, or Evangelist) to be on point.
6) Start measuring from the start of the program, be flexible with it
7) You’re not alone, every company is going through this in some regard, find a user group, like SMC.

I’m trying to stay more strategic than tactical (as the detailed ‘how to’ list is long). I feel very fortunate, I get to interact with those that are running these programs at some of the largest tech companies in the world. While it was fun when I ran those programs at my last job, it’s more fun watching the trend as companies become enlightened from awareness to overlay.

The Social Media Corporate Evolution
Here’s a common evolutionary path that I see many corporations going on.

1) Awareness
2) Comprehension
3) The internal scramble
4) Getting organized, ego check
5) Seeking information, getting resources
6) Trial project
7) Resources, time, or role applied
8 ) Full scale program launched
9) Integration into different business units / Internal confusion
10) Overlay across all activities, budget, headcount,
11) Customers and employees collaborate on products, marketing, and support

Each of these steps requires a series of activities, and key roles need to be present to make them happen.

So be means of comments, how sophisticated is your culture, what do they know? (first section) and where is your corporation in it’s evolution (second section)

LinkedIn wiki -> Networking-Groups: Milan-IN marked as The First Official LinkedIn Club!

MyLinkWiki is a collaborative web site all about LinkedIn. It contains article, tips, and links from leading LinkedIn users. Learn tips on using it better, how others are using LinkedIn, and how it can make you more successful. Explore MyLinkWiki through our Directory.

Wish to say it's the resource of Marc Freedman (known as MyLinkDaddy), and we're there with Milan-IN for quite a lot of time already.

Now the recent success story of Milan-IN has made lots of rumours around the Web, and one of the consequences of this PR action was the message I've received from Marc today. He writes (censored, the personal issues excluded):

Andrey,
I did notice the award as an official club and offer my congratulations.  It's taken a long time for LinkedIn to start recognizing its supporters. I updated  http://linkedin.pbwiki.com/NetworkingGroups with a link to the article.

So I go there to check and see:

Networking Groups ->  Location-based -> not US ->Italy - Milan:

Business Club 'MilanIN' - The First Official LinkedIn Club!

Thank you Marc!

Massimo and the gadgets from LinkedIn

Massimo and Andrea, IN
Inserito originariamente da avg_milano

Massimo is now back to Milan and he brought some  gadgets from LinkedIn ;)

Yesterday it was the first time (the first pizza/beer) when we met Massimo, after his successful visit to LinkedIn HQ.

Disclaimer: Andrea (on the left) is DG of Viadeo Italia, but he is in the Board of Milan-IN and we're the friends. So on that "pizza/beer party" we did not speak about LinkedIn/Viadeo but about Milan-IN and our personal things.

Is LinkedIn Working for you? [Conversation Agent, by Valeria Maltoni]

I found this article few days ago and I think it worth also your reading.

The style of Valeria Maltoni is very easy and open (not so open as of mine but however ). And I advice it also because there are some great comments for that article- so I also left my 5 cents there :)

Milan-IN will invest in its IT Platform!

Andrey Golub, IT/Web Manager- Business Club Milan-IN:

  • I am very happy! It's the first time when Milan-IN could arrange some funds to sponsor the efforts of its IT Team
The Club is growing fast in the number of new Members, and the fact that we're now moving toward a National-wide Network of City-IN Clubs (see the updates for Napoli-IN, Palermo-IN, Monaco-IN and the others will come soon), has made it very difficult for us to constantly develop and maintain the all-inclusive Platform for the Club. So the decision that has been made- is a very good turn!

It's true that we're a non-profit organisation, so the "some money" you may understand it's just a symbol, it's needed "to Break the Ice". But we hope that the next Networking Season and (why not?) the Donations from Club Members/ Partners, will make it really possible for us to include some professional/ payed power to our IT Team.

In the meanwhile, we are greatly thankful to those who supported us during these first two difficult years, the IT Team made from the great volunteers/ IT Professionals- Michael, Victor, Sean, Amit, and Andrey.
Anyone else wants to join the IT Group of Milan-IN? We're hiring! (write to me- manager.it AT milanin.com)

On the picture: Massimo Brembilla, head of Finance&Control Committee of Milan-IN, has just presented to the Management Counsel the Club balance, so we vote to invest some money in the IT Group's projects (platform improvement).

Milan-IN and wikipedia- let's do it again, Baby!

In the past we already had some bad experience with wikipedia (its Italian edition), when trying to link Milan-IN to Social Networks there (in different ways, all failed).

That time, after ~a month of "negotiations", we understood that "they do not want us" so we stopped. The most curious thing was that we've got a comment from some wiki's official high-level manager of Italy, that was "we have no control on it" (for Italy over wiki in general, and for wiki over community managing it). And some other similar comments, I do not remember all details anymore, but one may want to read the complete story in Italian written by Pier Carlo,-  Wikipedia: la DIS-Informazione.

Now, when Milan-IN has become an OFFICIAL LinkedIn Club of Italy, we believe that also wiki will stop ignoring/fighting (?) us, there is no reason anymore.

And in order to try: http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linkedin

In Italia

A Milano è attivo un club (MilanIn) che offre agli utenti la possibilità di incontrarsi. Questo Club è il primo al mondo ad essere stato riconosciuto ufficialmente da LinkedIn come suo Club ufficiale.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win!" :)

Telme- applying Network Marketing to the modern technology distribution (using Mobile VoIP globally=WoIP2)

Multi-level marketing

MLM is a business model that combines direct marketing with franchising.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Network marketing)

  • Carlo Branca

Yesterday I met Carlo Branca, he invited me for a pizza/beer, to present me Telme project, his personal role in "Telme-Italia"/"Telme-Italy", and of course for a personal chat about everything ;) Carlo is an open-minded and easy-going person, so I had a useful and entertaining evening.

I remember I've seen the web site of Telme some time before, but it was too flashy and hectic so I did not find it interesting ;) This time, before meeting Carlo, I checked Google about Telme, looked at the people related to this project and registered on LinkedIn as well as on the other Social Networks, and I've also got "They have some good technology, it's not only marketing!" from my friend and VoIP adept Michael. So I was expecting a very nice evening, and in fact it was so!

  • Telme vs. FON

In the very beginning Carlo ensured me that Telme is not like FON (see- FON wi-fi revolution is over!). They won't surprise later the people that trust them now :=) I mean that any "free" always has it's reverse side...yes, we had some chat also about my previous experience with the projects that have a similar scope- to connect people first and give them the basic service for free, then to learn their consume and needs, and to start applying ads, spam with multimedia or any other VAS on top of the basic service. I mean IPTV (in its true sense=unicast stream with profile matching), FON (broadband access, filtered/"enriched" by Google/eBay/Skype), and almost any kind of Social (free) Communication or Internet/IP free services.

The FREE and Cheap in the sense of Telme is free and cheap :)

And unlike FON, when Telme people speak about "Revolution", they mean the significant technological/ infrastructural change of Mobile Communication experience: no limits for service access/ device type, international- rouming, the basic service=calls is free/cheap, etc.) and that means the new experience of using the Mobile Communication, globally and for free/cheap!

But I see they never tell to their people that it's neccessary to make this revolution TOGETHER :), their agents are partners and they work for MONEY. Since the very beginning! Nobody is asked to fights for the idea and for free :)

  • VoIP evolution,  Mobile revolution

Brw, Carlo personally always called it with me "VoIP evolution", explaining that the sense is in the way the provider and its clients will use VoIP tomorrow. And I should agree with him/them, it's the right direction for the evolution of VoIP, and think that in some senses this will introduce some real "Revolution" also.

But for sure I like the Evolution term much more, remember I am an ex-USSR guy and I know very well what the Revolution means and how's to do one! :(

  • Network Marketing and Telme

The place for Network Marketing is of course in the growth of the Network of their clients=partners=agents (all-in-one). And it's nice that they also consider Telme a Social Networking Company.

Of course one of the goals (I hope not the only one, right Carlo?) was to try to hire also me :), but since I am an IT/ R&D guy, even taken into account my passions for Marketing/ Communication/ PR,- I had to tell to Carlo it won't work for me how it could work for any other their agent=partner=etc.

  • Social Networking and Network Marketing

Back to the "Telme is a social network company". Of course we spoke about a possibility to apply Network Marketing to Social Networks. It's the pleasure for me to have been considered an Expert of Social Networking. Right there I told to Carlo, honestly, that I do not see an easy way to apply their model to such a strong and pre-selected community as Business Club Milan-IN, but we agreed to study this subject together, to try to find another opportunity for Social Networks. We discussed Network flood and spam and so on...

It was nice to meet you, Carlo!

P.S. I believe I'll still update this article later. I did not have enough time to think better about what to write, 'coz I "promised" to Carlo to issue smth for tonight :)

Open a Business Networking Club in Naples, a Napoli-IN?

We're happy to communicate that in the past 2/3 months we've got so many requests to open a Business Networking Club in an Italian city under "Milan-IN" brand (be waiting for an important update soon!), so we gonna work very seriously on this issue now!

I'll communicate it one by one, the cities for which we're in some advanced stage of discussion. We'll create a mailbox dedicated to each component, where you may send your comments for a city-in.

Among the first important Italian cities to propose us a collaboration under the same flag, there was Torino, Roma, Bologna. Recently also Naples and Palermo! The others still to come, I believe :) wel'll see.

the first dedicated mailbox is: napoli-in@milanin.com

P.S. see my other updates about:  Napoli-IN, Palermo-IN, Monaco-IN, Roma-IN, Torino-IN, Bologna-IN, Firenze-IN, Genova-IN, Trieste-IN.

An Italian Business Club located in Palermo, could be Palermo-IN?

The idea to launch a Palermo-IN Business Networking Club for  the Sicilian capital, came after this topic on LinkedIn:

by Maurizio Gabriele. I replied there, explaining clearly(I hope) that Milan-IN is now entering it's Phase-II, means development of a National-wide Network of Business Networking Clubs, under the brand of Milan-IN, now also known as LinkedIn Italia Club.

Well, the bid for Palermo is open :) Please contact us at: palermo-in@milanin.com

P.S. see my other updates about:  Napoli-IN, Palermo-IN, Monaco-IN, Roma-IN, Torino-IN, Bologna-IN, Firenze-IN, Genova-IN, Trieste-IN.

Milan-IN and an opportunity for Principality of Monaco?

It now seems to us that this initiative (clubin.biz) won't have the border of Italy as it limit! Well, probably it was clear since the very beginning, when the friend and colleague Marco Marzagalli (Member of the Year 2006 of Milan-IN) left us for Zurich but has started working since the very beginning under the construction of Zurich-IN, following the spirit of Milan-IN!

Now it was Monaco and its capital Monte Carlo, to propose us an idea to launch a similar to Milan-IN Club under the same brand for PM. We'll see, contact us at: monaco-in@milanin.com

P.S. see my other updates about:  Napoli-IN, Palermo-IN, Monaco-IN, Roma-IN, Torino-IN, Bologna-IN, Firenze-IN, Genova-IN, Trieste-IN.

Our Ads on LinkedIn, day one: 800 new visits, 120 new membership requests!

Here is the situation- Milan web site is "under attack" of the LinkedIn referrals ! ;)

Today we discussed the Ads of Milan-IN presented on LinkedIn.com here and here in Blogs.

and I have another nice picture to show you here: it happened the first time with us, when the REFERRAL web sites (well, the only one and we know which one!) have such a big % in the overall site accesses. Usually it's mostly Google that brings people to us, thanks to our News and Blogs.

But now LinkedIn is also helping us!

The pages of Halldis (our Partner) have been updated on our server

Recently I wrote that Halldis have re-developed their web site.
btw, now they have also a RU-version of Halldis.com :) so today it was needed to update also the pages stored on our host (I am sorry for the delay! it was August and then LinkedIn's Ads ).

As I see from the updated pages- Halldis has done some important progress. their Network is growing and also their Guide Europe becomes more and more popular every day! my best congratulations to Pietro Martani, member and partner of Milan-IN. We thank you for having supported us during the "not easy" times.

197 new members connected to Pier Carlo today, and every minute a new one arrives :)

197 new members connected to Pier Carlo today, and every minute a new one arrives!

It's not a secret that we're in a little shock when after LinkedIn has put our banner to their web site, visible for all Milan-city area LinkedIn Members...

Pier Carlo, Milan-IN's President, is now back from his vacation and processing new requests for membership: he connects himself with the new members (on LinkedIn), and for how did we setup the work-flow for new members approvations, I see immediatelly those people already connected to Pier Carlo. Then it's my job to create a name.surname @ milanin.com mailbox for everyone of them, fix the profile (the things as LinkedIn ID/URL, user-id if surname has a complex structure etc.) and some other Admin-level checkings.

And having seen 197 "new tasks" for me for this week-end, I now feel myself of course very happy for our Project, but a little bit upset with how much time I'll have to spend before the "profiles" will become "user accounts" :) Well, I won't tell you how many people send me their "forgot my password" requests even if they're still not approved! ;)

It seems to me that taking into account the recent great success of Milan-IN Business Networking Club, we'll need to reorganize a bit our Org-Team, and review some work-flows for sure :) It's not passible anymore to manage in manual way the Club that's growing to ~100 Members every day!

Here is some more web site access statistics for the last days- it just confirms the early movements from here "Our Ads on LinkedIn, day one: 800 new visits, 120 new members" - LinkedIn is making the major accesses heap for us!
