One of the most exciting things about Facebook...

I think that one of the most exciting features of Facebook, invented by its creators or advised by some early adopters-"crazy" Facebookers, is POKE YOURSELF!

So if you have already poked all your friends and not only friends... but still can't tire of socializing- Poke yourself and be satisfied :)

The system wll ask you, of course: "Poke yourself?: You are about to poke yourself. This will appear on your homepage". And be sure to be strong enough to confirm! :)

Keywords: poke, poke yourself, facebook

mobile mobile mobile - where is the value? AMF Ventures explains why 'Mobile Web 2.0'

Received via e-mail from Tony Fish, CEO AMF Ventures, as their latest viewpoint. I found it FANTASTIC and a MUST READ for everybody interested in the future of Web 2.0!

London, November 2007

AMF Ventures is pleased to announce a new skill practice focused on delivering professional consultancy services that will enable your enterprise to build returns within the constraints of 1.0 and be ready to exploit opportunities created by 2.0 thinking...... and beyond.   Please do take a look at  www.amfventures.com

ViewPoint

This Viewpoint explains the power of 2.0 (two dot zero) ideals, why 'Mobile Web 2.0' centres on the unique value created by "mobile metadata" and why AMF Ventures believes that Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, understands that the ownership of mobile metadata will create more shareholder value than search!

Every CxO seeking to deliver any aspect of a convergent solution should read and debate this viewpoint as it impacts: mobile operators, handset manufactures, equipment supplies, platform supplier, application developers, middleware, venture capital, advertisers, consumer brands, media companies and agencies; the digital players.
Introduction

Web 2.0 talks of "harnessing collective intelligence". This viewpoint presents the idea of extending this concept to the realm of mobile Digital Footprints and explores where shareholder value will be created.

At the forefront of "harnessing collective intelligence" is the mobile device, as the device is able to capture content at the "point of inspiration". Notwithstanding any content captured directly from a device through an action of the user, there is the larger issue of Digital Footprints; this being the data captured (location and attention) just by keeping a mobile device with you.  This unique mobile data and its exploitation is the essence of 'Mobile Web 2.0'

Back in 1996, Nicholas Negroponte described the concept of Digital Footprints as a "slug trail". We have always left Digital Footprints. Web 1.0 was about the 'consumption web' and clicks; in 1.0 the user left some aspects of a Digital Footprint but did not 'write' to the web. 2.0 gave us the 'read/write web' and users have emerged as both creators and consumers, we are now the audience and the author. Since we are now writing and creating content we are leaving much larger footprints, however the mobile device can provide data on where we are, how long we have spent there and who you were with; without user input! This has significant implications. However, leaving aside the privacy and security arguments, there are other implications to the leaving and more importantly harnessing of these Digital Footprints.

Web 2.0 has shown us that customers are not afraid to 'share' data and personal information (for instance sharing personal photos using Flickr). With Mobile Web 2.0, we add the uniqueness of mobile and leap forward because the Mobile is a personal device. Extrapolation of the trends seen on the Web (sharing personal data) to the mobile devices suggests that we are likely to witness a much richer "Digital Footprint" - and more importantly - a footprint tied to personal identity through our personal mobile device. In that sense, the idea of harnessing collective intelligence becomes dramatically significant when coupled with the ideas of mobile Digital Footprints. Therein lays the significance of 'Mobile Web 2.0' and Eric Schmidt's assertion of 'Mobile Mobile Mobile' as the next opportunity.

What is 2.0?

2.0 is an umbrella for practical thinking that centres on the network effect, collective intelligence, the long tail, wisdom of crowds, clans, clubs and all other manner of data exploitation ideals. In contrast to this, early web models centred on cost reduction and zero cost of customer acquisition.

Companies such as Paypal, E-bay, Amazon, Last Minute and Google have changed our traditional methods of finding information, booking holidays and selling services. Consumers see the impact of these web services - but there is a wider and deeper impact which is not immediately evident. The impact is all pervasive i.e. it directly impacts on our children, our parents, our suppliers, our customers and our customer's referrals. It is all about the 'network effect' and the ownership of the underlying data i.e. the metadata. This is the basis of Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 brings the power of data ownership and the analysis which were previously the domain of large companies within the cost range of the SME. 2.0 technologies provide the data that the 'shop keeper' always had; which enabled him to welcome Mr. Smith and recommend something different to Mr Smith today. In that sense, moving from 1.0 to 2.0 is about the move from separation, isolation and solitude to relationship, engagement and conversation. The social engagement fostered by Web 2.0 and underpinned by data is more important than specific software, tools, methodology.

Tim O'Reilly [O'Reilly Media] described the 7 principles of Web 2.0 in an article published in October 2005. The article focused on the Web as a platform. The progressive thinking that underpins 2.0 has now extended across most sectors and business practices including:- Advertising 2.0, CRM 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, TV 2.0, Mobile and many more. Irrespective of use, 2.0 epitomises a business model that will be built on data, identity, trust and connection. Two services as shown in table 1, have typified Web 2.0 these are User Generated Content (UGC) and social networking.

Consumer or Creator?

Every call we make is about someone creating and someone consuming and then swapping roles. Every SMS we send is about creating, every SMS we receive is about consumption. Consumption is about one click; switch on the TV, buy on Amazon, read your message, receive a call. Creation is many clicks; dial a number, create an SMS and post a blog.

YouTube, Flickr and blogs are recognition that humans are as much creators as we are consumers. User Generated Content technologies have enabled the masses to put their creations into the public domain. We can create and this enables users to entertain themselves outside of the linear broadcast TV model; creation, in some instances, of content has become the mechanism of entertainment itself.

Whilst the Web consume model, balanced by new UGC and social networking models has seen massive growth, the mobile sector will soon over-take the Web as a platform for creation and social networking. The mobile phone has the advantage that it is always available and content can be created at the point of inspiration; this is the balance to consumption which is the 'point of entertainment.'

The mobile industry has focussed on the consumption model, which to a greater or lesser extent justified 3G business models via payment for services, applications and content. The creation side (photos and video) and taking content from the mobile to the web has emerged as a service that users exploit. Further, creators will put up with a poor user interface to engage, as it is their creation they will spend the time to master the processes.

Take up of consumption and creation within the mobile context is predicated on issues discussed at length within the mobile industry; battery life, handset constraints, UI, data pricing and access speeds. However, neither creation nor consumption are unique to mobile!

Mobile Web 2.0 - the uniqueness of mobile

The previous few paragraphs have briefly highlighted how value can be created from a mobile device as:

  • the device is always available at the point of inspiration (creation) and point of entertainment (consumption);
  • it provides a new media platform to complement Print, TV and Web, and;
  • it is available for payment, either as a replacement or complement to plastic and cash. Which form and what limits are furiously debated by commentators who are either protecting or seeking to exploit.

Value added mobile business models were built on the idea that the user would consume and pay for content and applications. Progression of technology has allowed the Web to become mobile, bringing to the mobile service provider the possibility of advertising revenue. New and additional value could therefore be accessed utilising the same ideas that have driven Web 2.0, insomuch as the mobile can mimic the Webs' focus on clicks within the application or browser to deliver the data and information for personalisation, context and advertising revenue. These clicks are known as our "Digital Footprint" and are a driver of value creation. Digital Footprints come from Mobile, Web and TV - the digital metadata of who we are, the true value and why the ownership of this data is the battle ground to be won and lost.

The reason AMF Ventures believes Eric Schmidt will wake up thinking "mobile, mobile, mobile" before he looks at his email,  worries about the value of Double Click or improving a search algorithm is because users spend least time on TV, some on the Web but the mobile is attached personally 24/7.

However, even if mobile based form factors will be the predominant method of Web access globally, this thinking has limited the real value and uniqueness of mobile, as it has constrained the possibility of data collection to clicks from within the mobile browser or application.

If unique "mobile metadata", data that the mobile platform can deliver which cannot be collected or obtained from another source, can be sourced; it will create value over and above other platforms such as the Web or TV. AMF Ventures has identified four unique categories of "mobile metadata" that add value to a users' 'Digital Footprint' and are waiting to be exploited. These are:

  • Availability - as the device is with the user from dawn to dusk;
  • Location - where the user is, has been, is going;
  • Attention - what the user is spending the time doing, outside of an application or browser, and;
  • Who - who the user is doing activities with.

The value creation opportunity comes from the ownership of these metadata categories, as the owner will be able to undertake the analysis and exploit the trends and connections. It is unlikely the user will ever know this (or care!), as long as the final service which they see will be tailored exactly to their needs.

The implications of Mobile Web 2.0

How will this vision of mobile Digital Footprints be delivered and what technology/ technologies will be used? Clearly it is a whole 2.0 ecosystem question which aligns with recent announcements from Google who also believe that an alliance spanning handset manufacturers, network operators, developers and software vendors is required. Such alliances recognise that benefit individually, benefits collectively.  Give this recognition that we must look at all components of the value chain at once and no individual component (or entity) in itself can deliver a service that the customer values it is a likely to be a mashup.

Hence, the device, the network and the software stack must all act in harmony to create an ecosystem which delivers a truly tailored service to the customer (in return for the Digital Footprint that the customer is willing to share with the trusted entity.

Accepting the principle that users don't care about the underlying technology and will willingly share their Digital Footprints, the same users focus on: trust  and value. User will work with the provider that they trust most as long as they perceive value from the delivery of these advanced services.  The provider that understands this principle stands to leapfrog the competition through network effects and can deliver more advanced services to the user, at a lower cost with improved performance; it is likely that such a provider will reduce churn, improve margin and increase market share.

Concluding remark

Although slow in coming, Mr Negroponte's slug trail is finally upon us with Dr Schmidt's vision.  The combination of Mobile Web 2.0, Digital Footprints and Trust is very disruptive. 2.0 thinking has a significant impact on network access choice, middleware platform functionality and device capability. The impact of this combination is just being felt and the effects will accelerate with Google's recent announcements about 'Android' Google clearly recognises that the whole ecosystem must grow with all existing players benefiting (and that's the difference between a Gphone (going it alone) and Android (an alliance).
AMF Ventures suggests BRANDS look at these developments as opportunities - rather than threats. However there are many questions which AMF Ventures can help you consider and explore:

  • How can we align our company to best leverage this new world?
  • What about advertising?
  • How do we work with the new (aligned) device stack?
  • What about open source?
  • What are the implications of leveraging open source on devices?
  • How can we create a true Web 2.0 system by harnessing metadata and gain competitive advantage?
  • How do we engender trust?

Considering trust, this may be Google's biggest competitive advantage. Think of this every time a '@gmail.com' email arrives.  The product still shows 'Beta' and yet millions of users are prepared to let email reside on Gmail and more importantly accept advertising in return.

There is a wide range of opportunities to create value for companies in the expanding mobile value chain and eco-system, however, emerging business models will be based on different economics. "Mobile Web 2.0" is about the uniqueness of "mobile metadata" in relation to the Digital Footprint and is not merely about the extension of the Web to the Mobile.

Kind regards
Tony Fish

Creatives are Bad Tracks a Milano

via Luca Oliverio

Creatives are Bad Tracks a Milano

It's really cool to be the number ONE in the World (even if for one day)? My profile on Spock Leadership Board

I have discovered this morning that my Spock Power has become so high :), so that Spock Power LeaderBoard shows me as the number one on Spock!

I know this Leadership Board does not include the real Spock Leaders as Maia (since she is a Spock employee), and I also understand that this "power" is not a real world power :) but just some number calculated on the base of some rules defined by Spock...

However it's always nice to see your face/ name shown the first in any world-list, right? And in the case of Spock it's even bigger joy, since Spock is ABOUT PEOPLE!

So I Speak SPOCK, and YOU?

A "World Citizen Program" Web 2.0 project

Recently I had a chat with Eric Kastler about his ambitious project World Citizen Program. http://www.worldcitizenprogram.org

and I advice it also to the others, at least to check their basic values and their manifesto! I think that this [future] project is web 2.0 and very serious, as this is a huge international project and 'down to earth'.

Please contact directly Eric if you're interested to participate, I know they are always welcoming partnerships and join ventures! And we'll try to develop some bridge from Milan-IN to there, of course :)

XING search for Explorer and Firefox

BRAVO Xing!

Today I've got their newsletter with this great news item-

XING search for Explorer and Firefox
Ever want to get up to speed about a specific person while surfing the Internet? Integrate the XING search function directly into your browser, and get information about millions of members even quicker. You can add the XING search button to Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox with the click of a button.
Add the XING search to your browser now

It would be even better if Xing search bar could search for me also through my Neurona's Network, since we know that Neurona now takes part of Xing empire.

So today I have already 3 Social Search Bars installed for my FF, that I use daily- this new one of Xing, the classical of LinkedIn and the recent from Spock. Although Jay from Spock says that very soon I'll need the only one to search throughout all my Networks from my Spock profile...

We'll see, in the meanwhile I use all of them, in addition to lots of classical for the "Web 1.0" services that provide their own Search Bar- search (Google, Yahoo and other browsers, Answers.com, Amazon.com, Creative Commons, LinkedIn Jobs, Ubuntu Package, Wikipedia and some other that I do not use ofter but have installed).

Linkedin to allow partners building companion applications on their sites

We've been waiting for this so long time... And now LinkedIn is available for partners!

LinkedIn Gets Web 2.0 Makeover

The professional networking site LinkedIn on Monday announced a sweeping redesign of its Web site and a new developer platform that allows partners to build companion applications on their sites.

Well, the rules of Business Networking are changing, right? ;) This piece is very interesting- I am so much happy for LinkedIn:

LinkedIn is one of the fastest-growing social networks today, boasting a 189 percent jump in membership this October compared last October, and attracting about 1.1 million new members a month.

And this is the core of the news-

The first is a set of APIs and widgets that LinkedIn will make available to its partners to integrate into their own sites. The second enables those partners to establish a branded presence in the LinkedIn community through Google's OpenSocial development model.

Make money with Facebook? Check your InterNET Worth, with Weblo.com!

Want to make money with Facebook, MySpace, Blogger etc?

Check Your InterNET Worth with Weblo.com!
What is Weblo.com?

Weblo is a parallel universe that is the only virtual world based on the real world. Members own and manage websites that are virtual replicas of real cities, states, properties, domains and celebrities. Members earn real money via hits, internet ads and by selling or auctioning assets for a profit. Members enhance their online portfolios by claiming popular social networking profiles, blogs, emails and videos in Weblo's Calculate Your InterNET Worth section.

In order to check how easy is to use Weblo in combination with Facebook (my favourite general-purpose Social Network, after the two professional/specialized LinkedIn and Spock), I have just made this morning an experiment with my profile on Facebook.

So Facebook (of course you must already have a profile there).

  • Select Facebook Icon from the Social Networks section (later you'll be able to add another your Social Networks, Blog accouns, etc)

  • Enter your account login information (hm...)
  • Wait until "Please wait while the worth of your Facebook profile is being calculated. This may take a few minutes..." message does not disappear
  • Check for your account's value. In my case it was $1,690.04. btw, how was it measured? they did not explain,- I do not know if it's a small, or very small, or a bigger than small, or a big amount [for month? total? for day?] ;)
  • Weblo will propose you- Add InterNET Worth to your Facebook account. Do it of course. It's a normal "3-rd party application" for Facebook. btw, lots of another useful and useless apps are available here

AFTER THAT:

Weblo says to you: "Your Ad Space has been created. You do not need Ad Code for this Ad Space.". That means there is nothing to do else, the integration for Facebook from Weblo is done! And they confirm it once again some later-

Ads are placed directly on your profile under the InterNET Worth Facebook application each time you update your Facebook profile value.

(this is the difference with Google Adsense, Weblo is able to embed their service to Facebook directly. but for another Web apps you'll have to copy/paste some HTML code, the same as with Google, Yahoo, etc)

It's done! Enter FACEBOOK, you'll find there in your profile's log:

<Your-Name> added the InterNET Worth application
<Your-Name> has just moved up in the Facebook Rich List. How much is your Facebook profile worth?

MySpace introduces ad-funded mobile service

via fiercemobilecontent.com

Social networking website MySpace introduced a free, ad-funded mobile version optimized for all U.S. carriers, calling into question the future of premium MySpace services available via AT&T, T-Mobile and Helio.

According to MobiAD Network, the new service enables users to send and receive messages and friend requests, comment on photos, post bulletins, update blogs and search for friends--while advertising will at first remain limited to sponsorships and banner ads, parent Fox Interactive Media said it will eventually introduce more targeted campaigns based on user registration data as well as local ads based on GPS data. "Accessing the Internet from your mobile phone will soon be as common as text messaging and voice calling," said Fox Interactive's senior vice president of mobile John Smelzer.

Spock Tags: The "Most Influential Women in Technology" great tag on Spock

It's probably the most exciting tag that I've seen till today on Spock: "Most Influential Women in Technology", assigned to Vanessa Dimauro by Spock Robot (my co-tagger ).

The Vanessa's record in Wikipedia says

  • Vanessa DiMauro (b. 1967) is a community builder and researcher whose work focuses on the role learning and decision-making play in online environments
  • ...named her one of Boston’s Most Influential Women in Technology

And just a technical detail- there is another more complete profile of Vanessa Dimauro on Spock, and I suggested to merge these two profiles, using the newest cool feature of Spock- Duplicate Search Results? You have the Power to Merge.

Spock Tags: "a weapon for the opposition" (The Scary Guy)

Who does not know The Scary Guy? The man legally changed his name (from Earl Kenneth Kaufmann), who is now very famous for his Evangelism of changing the world by eliminating the violence and hate from it! The man is covered by tattoos to 80+ percents and there are lots of other interesting facts from the life of Mr. Scary Guy on Spock!

The one tag looks quite not-in-place for his profile, but it's true if you think better about his mission. This tag is a weapon for the opposition, the tags that uniquely (in today's snapshot) identifies the cool scary dude in the whole Spock's DB!

I think The Scary Guy should meet Belle Grillo. Those two men could do some great projects (and great business?) together, right?

Spock FAQ: "People you may want to add" sidebar on your home page

Spock users ask- what's the criteria used by Spock recommendation system to propose us the other people "we may want to add" to the Trust Network. Here is it shown on the picture (on the right).

And here is the comment of Jay Bhatti (co-founder & VP)-

here is the criteria for who shows up:

1. People that are in the trust network of people you trust
2. People that you have in your address book who you wanted Spock to
scan and search for on the internet, but who you did not invite to
your trust network the first time around.
I hope this helps. We plan to get smarter over time on who we
recommend you add

So connect and reconnect!

The Power to Create World Peace Lives Within Each and Everyone of Us. (Scary)

Thanks to the power of Web 2.0, I met The Scary Guy, the World legend, the person I could read only on Wikipedia before. But now thanks to Spock I've become a Social Friend of The Scary, and also entered to his Social Network on Ning.

I honestly think it's very important what's that man is doing for the World. The power of his words helped to lots of people and organisations already. And well, my "power" is only a Web 2.0 power, but anyway it's a power, right? :) So I'll now try to use it to help The Scary if I can.

btw, registered The Scary Guy's Social Network in the "Social Networking worldwide" list on our Web Site. please check!

Scary Guy's Social Network
The goal of The Scary Guy Social Network is to harness the cognitive capacity that lives within each individual to create peace within themselves. This network of people, who seek to learn about themselves, will help the world heal.

Spock FAQ: Remove/ Modify my TAGS

On the official Spock Help/ Faq pages there is one issue that discusses how one can change/ remove the own vote previously done:

Change Your Mind?

In case you entered incorrect information, just click the blue arrow, then "Change Vote," then "Remove Vote."  If no one else has already voted on that piece of information, it will be removed from the search result.

But some people could not easily find the "blue arrow" to re-vote/ remove their vote, as it comes from a topic "remove/modify tags... (still un-voted)" on Spock Power Users Group.

So the picture below explains the How-To. Thanks to Kathy Jacobs, Spock Power User and Evangelist, who was the first to answer and to publish this picture.

Inside Mobile and Wireless: Mobile Search- Why It is Different from Desktop Search?, from J. Gerry Purdy

Received via e-mail from J. Gerry Purdy, VP & Chief Analyst of Frost & Sullivan.

I think it's the same FANTASTIC and a MUST READ, as my previously blogged viewpoint from Tony Fish about Mobile Web 2.0.

Mobile Search: Why It's Different from Desktop Search

December 2007

When data services became rich on wireless handsets, search began to be used by wireless handset users, much in the same way they thought of using search on their a desktop PCs: they simply provide some keywords and the search engine responds back with hundreds of links that likely will provide the information that was requested (along with a number of ads).

The method of input to mobile search is close to the same as the method of input for desktop search (except for the obvious need to be more concise when typing using a 10-key numeric keypad instead of an alphanumeric keypad). However, the methods of output from desktop and mobile search are really quite different. Here??s why.

Users think about their search requirements in the same way, whether they are on a desktop or using a wireless handheld with wireless broadband connectivity (such as Wi-Fi zones or wide area wires connectivity). So, while your requirements for search are basically the same, your expectations for replies are drastically different between desktop and mobile: mobile users are focused entirely on results, not just links to results.

Google, Yahoo!, and all the other major mobile search firms have a new challenge: design their software to generate and display results that will best answer the user??s search inquiry - not just provide links to that information. This is one of the main reasons that mobile search is very different from desktop search.

Take a look at typical Google search result shown below (searching on ??mobile search??). You can see that there??s a list of links providing information about mobile search and, correctly, showing both Google and Yahoo! at the top of the list.

Now, take a look at the way in which Yahoo! oneSearch for mobile presents output to a typical search: you can see that the mobile screens (shown to the left as a pallet) contain actual content - not just links to other websites. This allows users to get information on the mobile display that is useful and, in many cases, does not require any additional action.

The challenge in doing this, of course, is to determine a user??s query intent and then figure out which content is the most relevant and what users would find most beneficial. That takes a new expertise that is over and above the talent and experience for doing traditional search.

Google does this kind of useful direct display results in its desktop search when you search on a popular place like a restaurant. Here??s the result of a Google desktop search for ??Bice in Palm Beach?? (one of our favorites):

Therefore, in mobile search, it is important to give the user results and answers - not just the links to the information. Google, Yahoo!, and other mobile search engines are all working on this kind of output.

Yahoo!??s website shows why it feels that oneSearch is better than Google (at least at this point in time). The company provides a side-by-side comparison of the output from a number of mobile search requests. The following comparison is from the search request ??Pizza.?? Google does provide some results (rather than just links), but oneSearch does appear to provide a great deal more information than Google in a robust and easy to navigate interface. Both mobile search requests recognize that the phone is in New York. Eventually, specific location will be available on all mobile phones, which will make the mobile search results even more relevant than they are today.

Yahoo! feels that it has an early advantage in this method of focusing on results by providing a lot of useful information for each search. Recently, Yahoo! incorporated content from Yahoo! Answers and Wikipedia to increase the amount of rich content available in consumers' mobile search results.

The company also recently introduced Yahoo! oneSearch Flight Tracker with up-to-the-minute flight information, including flight departure/arrival times, departing/arriving terminals, and gates. Consumers simply need to enter the airline and flight number (for example: United Airlines 97 or UA 97) into Yahoo! oneSearch, or send an SMS query to 92466 (spells YAHOO), and Yahoo! will provide detailed information on the specific flight.

I want to point out that there are a number of companies besides Google and Yahoo that are doing good work in mobile search. Mobile Computing Network (MCN) has developed a concept of ??federated?? search for mobile, in which it analyzes results from other search engines and then provides users with a combined integration of what it feels is the best available answers to the search inquiry. Medio is a ??white label?? mobile search company that provides mobile search to wireless operators so they can provide mobile search under their own brand. And ClairMail provides a means that users can ask search questions inside their wireless email system, such as BlackBerry, and get answers sent back via email.

Thus, you??ll quickly come to expect that doing a search on your wireless handheld will give you more relevant results than using desktop search. And I suspect that the lessons learned from mobile search will migrate back into the desktop to make those results more relevant over time as well.

Intervista a Liz O’Donnell, LinkedIn International Director

Buona lettura.

The Seven Biggest Mobile Content Stories of 2007

from fiercemobilecontent.com

The Seven Biggest Mobile Content Stories of 2007

In an industry as young as mobile content, every year can seem like a turning point. But 2007 feels especially monumental--consider where the business was in January compared to where it is now. The news and trends outlined below were the major catalysts behind the industry's transformation, each chosen as much for its headline-grabbing impact this year as for its potential ripple effect across the years to come. From the home office in Wahoo, Nebraska, here are the Seven Biggest Mobile Content Stories of 2007.

Apple introduces the iPhone. For sheer advance hype alone, no story was bigger in 2007, but for the most part the iPhone delivered on its promise. The device effectively transformed consumer perceptions of the mobile media experience, delivering music, video and web services via means of a simple, intuitive user interface and wrapping it all up in a sleek, elegant product design. If you still question its impact, consider this: Earlier this month, research firm NetApplications released its breakdown of operating system market share for November 2007, reporting that in just five months since its commercial debut, the iPhone has secured a 0.1 percent share of the global browsing market, topping web browsing on all Windows Mobile devices combined. The iPhone is now the tenth most popular web browsing platform, a short distance behind desktop platforms Windows NT, Linux and Windows ME, as well as the most popular mobile browser overall.

Google launches Android. After months of frenzied speculation on its mobile future, most of it forecasting an iPhone-like device known colloquially as the gPhone, Google zigged instead of zagging by introducing Android, a Linux-based open software platform for mobile devices. The Internet behemoth also will lead a broad industry group, dubbed the Open Handset Alliance, formed with the stated goal of "fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers a far better user experience than much of what is available on today's mobile platforms." In essence Google turned upside-down the conventional mobile revenue model, virtually giving away software and services in exchange for income derived from targeted mobile advertising efforts while promising "one of the most progressive, developer-friendly open-source licenses, which gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products." Which leads us to...

Verizon Wireless embraces open access. After Verizon Wireless said it will open its network to enable subscribers to use handsets, software and applications not otherwise offered by the operator by the end of 2008, CEO Lowell McAdam admitted the carrier would not have made the decision had Google's Android not pointed the way. While it's still unclear exactly how Verizon defines "open," the operator stated that early next year it will publish technical standards enabling the development community to create products to interface with its network, adding that any CDMA-based device meeting minimum technical criteria will be approved for consumer use. Moreover, any application the subscriber chooses will be allowed on approved devices. Looking forward, the move essentially forces Verizon's operator rivals to follow suit and tackle head-on their worst fear--deteriorating into little more than dumb pipes.

Handset makers become service providers. New music, video and gaming services from device giants like Nokia and Sony Ericsson further upset the traditional balance of power in the mobile industry. Faced with competition from Apple--not just the iPhone, but the corresponding iTunes digital storefront as well--handset makers are increasingly forced to develop their own content portals in conjunction with new devices, even at the risk of alienating their network partners. "We are constantly thinking beyond the phone," said Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo this summer. "Devices alone are no longer enough." The backlash was inevitable, as Orange UK griped in a leaked memo that the combination of the Nokia link and Orange's own branded music service on the same handset could confuse its subscribers, prompting a threatened boycott of Nokia's new N81 device. Similar turf wars are certain to follow.

Amp'd Mobile declares bankruptcy. Amp'd wasn't the only MVNO to go belly-up this year--Disney Mobile and XE Mobile also bit the dust, and Helio is hemorrhaging cash at an alarming rate--but given its focus on data services, the operator's demise was the most alarming flameout of all. In its brief existence Amp'd nurtured strong consumer demand for mobile entertainment: In the first quarter of 2007, its subscribers downloaded twice as many videos, songs and games as in the fourth quarter of 2006. The problem is that by May, roughly half of its 175,000 subscribers were no longer paying their bills. While operational snafus are to blame for Amp'd Mobile's demise, the larger question remains: Can a mobile operator successfully differentiate its service solely on content?

The Writers Guild of America hits the picket lines. In early November, Hollywood writers went on strike after months of negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers failed to yield a new contract. Chief among the scribes demands: A fair share of income derived from webisodes, mobisodes and other scripted new-media formats. Producers don't know just how lucrative these new platforms will be, so they're refusing to budge. The strike is now almost two months old, with no end in sight--conventional wisdom suggests network programmers will respond by devoting even more airtime to reality TV and other non-scripted programming, formats that rarely draw audiences in repeat viewings…which does not bode at all well for mobile TV, a fledgling medium already unhealthily dependent on repurposed network and basic cable content. The fallout promises to determine the commercial viability of the mobile TV platform as well as the content that comprises it. A story that gets bigger every day, simply because no one has any clue when and how it will end.

Radiohead goes digital. By refusing to renew its contract with longtime label EMI and releasing its newest LP In Rainbows direct to consumers as a download available exclusively on its official website, critical darling Radiohead struck a potentially fatal blow against the record industry as we've long known it, proving both traditional hard-copy formats and online retail middlemen superfluous in the digital age. Most intriguing, Radiohead let fans pay exactly what they wanted for the album. The economics were debated endlessly, with online survey firm ComScore estimating the average price per download at $2.26. But in a recent New York Times profile, reporter Jon Pareles writes "Under a typical recording contract, a band receives royalties of about 15 percent of an album's wholesale price after expenses are recovered. Without middlemen, and with zero material costs for a download, $2.26 per album would work out to Radiohead's advantage--not to mention the worldwide publicity."

News from Naymz: Reputation Assessments

Several people have contacted me yesterday and today about to connect, to reconnect :), to ask to leave a "comment" for them (endorsement in the Naymz's language) through Naymz. I think it's related with the releasing of a new Reputation Assessments feature by Naymz (they sent an update to everybody so people started "poking" each other).

here is the explanation provided by Naymz in one invitation message sent to me by one my contact-

In an effort to improve the RepScore system, we have made a significant change to Naymz.

From now on, members of your Reputation Network may assess your reputation and you may assess theirs. Just visit your Reputation Network page to edit assessments at any time. A couple more points:

  • Reputation assessments are optional and your answers are anonymous
  • The point value of an assessment is based on the RepScore of the assessor and their answers
  • Contacts who do not provide assessments will have no affect on your RepScore
  • You can still achieve a great baseline RepScore with the Profile Completeness and Identity Verification portions of the score
  • Click here to ask existing members of your Reputation Network to update their assessments of you. Reciprocate!

We are constantly looking for ways to improve the RepScore system and other aspects of the Naymz product. Your feedback is always appreciated!

Best Wishes,

The Naymz Team

Avoid social spammers! (spamming on spock, discussion on Spock Power Users forum)

Michael has started two days ago a very serious discussion on Spock Power Users forum,- about spamming on spock and how to protect ourselves from co-called "power networkers", people that have a completely mistaken understanding of the TRUST and RELATIONS concept.

The topic is here- spamming on spock. And my comment was probably too much strong taking into account that I am for 3+ years a Evangelist of Business Networking with LinkedIn. But it's what I truly believe in! you may not agree, and for sure you'll not agree if you're from such "power networker"- mega-connector, or "lion" or "toplinked". Anyway I'll put my comment also here, it's very important for me.

I can only agree with Michael, since we discussed this problem in personal talks.

My quite big experience with social networks says there will always be a place for "Social Spamming" like in the case of Michael, but in "another places" it's quite easy to deal with it: you setup your profile access preferences + it's usually enough to once blacklist somebody.
On Spock some tools are available, but there is no clear strategy/ guidelines or it's not properly communicated to the Users- how to deal in such situations? how to protect the own profile from "social spamming"? How to refuse/ blacklist definitively and how to rollback the action in the case of a mistaken a decision?

Misunderstanding of the "trust" concept? It happens everywhere! :(
I am a LinkedIn Evangelist myself, probably one of the most known everywhere :), but I HATE the idea of those "lions", "open networkers" and toplinked.com lists and so on. LinkedIn is a professional and business networking tool, but those people call themselves "power user" when they are just "connection collectors", so "not trusted peers" and "to avoid for serious requests" from my point of view, and for lots of other people that believe that the POWER of a Business Network is not the quantity but the quality of it peers and relations between them!

With Spock it's an issue, since it's totally 2.0 so community managed... and if somebody or lots of suck folks do not understand the concept of trust, or I'd say they probably do understand it but ignore the sense of it, thinking only about the NUMBER of relations (in relations to Spock- they think about POWER)- in respect of those mistaken networkers we must have a mechanism to deal with.
Otherwise on Spock it will become very hard to maintain own profile clean.

and one thing is my profile or Michael's or Marcello's one, we are "power networkers" in the sense of experience so we'll find a way to "defend" ourselves :). but you imagine what such social spammer could do with the profiles of VIP people, of CEO-level people that do not have so much time to understand the rules, to clean, maintain their profile and etc- performing social networking regularly. Those people will be unlucky and most probably will ask Spock to remove their profiles at all!

I think the only solution for this problem is to delegate to the COMMUNITY, the most trusted peers, managing this and similar issues, giving us some proper tools to mark inappropriate content/ relations/ profiles etc! I know some of such tools are already available, inclusind Spock Robots/ Police Agents, I know, I just continue my thought :)

"Avoid social spammers!" (C)

Top 10 Start-ups worth watching, to follow, in 2008. by Wired News- Spock is also presented!

Top 10 Startups Worth Watching in 2008

Credit crunch? Recession risk? You'd never know it, judging by the frenzy of startup activity. In fact, it's a pretty good time to start a company.

Generous payouts from Web 1.0 IPOs and more-recent acquisitions have given rise to a new generation of angel investors and venture capitalists. Plus, getting acquired by Google is an attractive and plausible exit strategy for many entrepreneurs. Those factors have combined to make a startup market almost as frothy as the dot-com bubble.

We say almost, because the spending is a bit less lavish than before, and because -- unlike 1999 -- many of the new crop of startups have real promise. Here are 10 pre-IPO, pre-acquisition companies worth watching in 2008.

23andMe

There's a lot you could buy with $1,000, but for that price 23andMe offers something never before sold to the masses: your DNA. Are you predisposed to prostate cancer? Glaucoma? Heart disease? 23andMe, profiled recently in Wired, can tell you. The implications could rock the medical world -- and the ethical one. As the science of genomics continues to improve, 23andMe should be able to provide ever-better information. In 2008, it will also provide social networking between customers who share traits ranging from ethnic origins to disease profiles.
  • Founders: Linda Avey and Anne Wojcicki
  • Funding: $12 million, from Genentech, Google and New Enterprise Associates
  • Employees: 30

37Signals

There's a reason nobody ever uses the phrase, "It's as simple as computer programming." But Chicago's 37Signals has made life simpler for programmers and small businesses alike with products such as Basecamp (project management software) and an increasingly popular open source web framework called Ruby on Rails. The company ditches the philosophy of "more features, more better" in favor of simplicity and accessibility: Focus only on the most important features and make things easier to use. The company itself embodies its keep-it-simple philosophy: Fewer than 10 staffers, working from humble offices, create programs quickly and nimbly adapt them based on user feedback. 37Signals released version 2.0 of Ruby on Rails in December, which should give many programmers a happy new year.
  • Founders: Jason Fried, Ernest Kim, Carlos Segura
  • Funding: Undisclosed sum from Bezos Expeditions
  • Employees: 8

AdMob

When AdMob launched in 2005, its prospects did not look bright. As a startup mobile-advertising network, it would have to compete with Google, and how feasible is that? But AdMob has defied the odds. While Google is just four months into testing a mobile version of its advertising network, AdMob has already served 12 billion ad impressions to mobile users. As more consumers buy web-enabled mobile phones, the prospects for mobile advertising can only improve.
  • Founder: Omar Hamoui
  • Funding: Undisclosed Series A from Sequoia Capital; $15 million Series B from Accel Partners and Sequoia Capital
  • Employees: 65

BitTorrent

As a peer-to-peer, or P2P, download protocol, BitTorrent was perfect for illegal file sharing. But in late 2007, the parent company of that protocol -- also called BitTorrent -- unveiled a potentially disruptive new use for its P2P technology: a platform that software providers and media companies can use to help customers download high-resolution files faster (and legally). By reducing distribution hurdles, BitTorrent will make online video and software sales increasingly viable in 2008 and will challenge the notion that the idiot box is the primary way to get your CSI fix.
  • Founders: Bram Cohen and Ashwin Navin
  • Funding: $28.75 million from Accel Partners and DCM (formerly Doll Capital Management)
  • Employees: 60

Dash

Today, GPS is a one-way street, with a satellite beaming instructions to your device. You turn left because a chip inside your GPS device calculated that would the best route. In 2008, Dash will chart a new course with Dash Express, a GPS that learns from its users. If a Dash owner is moving 5 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, Dash servers will realize he's in traffic and warn other Dash drivers to choose faster routes. Sure beats calling 5-1-1.
  • Founders: Brian Smartt, Mike Tzamaloukas, Steve Wollenberg
  • Funding: $45 million from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sequoia Capital, Skymoon Ventures, Crescendo Ventures, ZenShin Capital Partners, Artis Capital, Gold Hill Capital, and several individuals
  • Employees: 85

Fon

You pay for internet access at home, so why must you pay for it again at the coffee shop, the airport and the hotel? That frustration spawned Spanish Wi-Fi startup Fon. It's a simple idea: Give and you shall receive. "Foneros" first agree to share their home wireless connections with other Fon customers using a special router, which splits the signal into public and private streams. In exchange, they get the privilege of using any of the network's wireless signals anywhere in the world for free. Fon has inked important deals with TimeWarner Cable in the United States, BT in Britain and Neuf in France, and its network has expanded to an impressive 600,000 registered users worldwide. Free global internet for the price you already pay at home? Sign us up!
  • Founder: Martin Varsavsky
  • Funding: Approx. $35 million from Skype, Google, Index Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Excite, Digital Garage and BT
  • Employees: Approximately 90 worldwide

LinkedIn

LinkedIn, a career-oriented social networking site, found 16 million users, yet until recently has been eclipsed by much larger, livelier competitors. Now, a much-needed upgrade has the 4-year-old startup looking pretty good after all. A new developer platform aims to bring LinkedIn networks to the web at large, starting with Business Week's website, which will show your connections to any companies mentioned in news articles you're reading. LinkedIn still emphasizes utility over frivolity, and that's just the way we like it. Instead of virtual hugs and stripper name generators, expect the site to add "modules" that gather news and events from your industry. The dull-but-useful strategy seems to be working: LinkedIn projects revenues of nearly $100 million in 2008 -- not too shabby compared to much larger Facebook's estimated $150 million for 2007.

  • Founders: Reid Hoffman, Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly, Jean-Luc Valliant
  • Funding: $27.5 million from Sequoia Capital, Greylock, the European Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, and numerous individual angel investors
  • Employees: 200

Powerset

It's gotten hard to imagine a world where Google doesn't dominate internet search, but some believe that if anyone can dethrone the king, it's Powerset. The San Francisco company is developing an alternative "natural language" search technology, which takes into account the actual meaning and context of words in a sentence. Of course, it's not the first time someone has tried to make computers think more like human beings, and HAL 9000 is still MIA. And despite an impressive demo at the TechCrunch 40 conference in September, Powerset's management has struggled recently, losing one founder (Steve Newcomb) while another (Barney Pell) stepped down from the CEO position. Even if Powerset's search engine doesn't make it to market in 2008, Silicon Valley will be closely watching to company for any signs of progress -- or lack thereof.
  • Founders: Steve Newcomb, Barney Pell and Lorenzo Thione
  • Funding: $12.5 million from Foundation Capital, The Founder's Fund and several angel investors
  • Employees: 60

Slide

In the battle of Facebook vs. the OpenSocial gang, there's one assured winner, and it's not even technically in the fight. Slide, the largest provider of third-party applications (aka "widgets") to websites and social networks, stands to win no matter which network comes out on top. (Slide's chief widget-making rival, RockYou, is also well in the mix.) Slide's success is only pegged to the social networking trend, which shows no signs of flagging in 2008.
  • Founder: Max Levchin
  • Funding: Initial funding from Max Levchin; a rumored $20 million from BlueRun Ventures, The Founder's Fund, Khosla Ventures, Mayfield Fund
  • Employees: 60

Spock

Google can search the web by keyword, but Spock gets more directly at a single question: What does the web know about you? By crawling the web for personal information and combining that with social network data, Spock creates a hub for information about actual people. Enter your name in Spock's pared-down interface and find out what the internet knows about you, or search by a keyword to find, say, ornithologists or sommeliers. Spock generates its profiles automatically, but individuals can "claim" theirs and correct any misinformation. In fact, you might want to check yours right now....
  • Founders: Jaideep Singh and Jay Bhatti
  • Funding: $8 million from Clearstone Venture Partners and Opus Capital
  • Employees: 25

Think of LinkedIn as an (open?) framework now, like Facebook (or Flickr) for Business, powered by OpenSocial

By Scott Gilbertson December 10, 2007 | 10:16:45 AMCategories: communities

The New LinkedIn Platform Shows Facebook How It's Done

A social network showdown is coming. LinkedIn, which aims to track your business and professional connections, has rolled out a new developer platform and already the majority of the web press is comparing LinkedIn's efforts Facebook's platform. It's a fair comparison, but there's one key difference between the two — LinkedIn's platform is actually useful.

Where Facebook’s platform provides a proprietary programming language for developers to build applications that run inside the site (so you can send you friends a fresh pair of virtual diapers or whatever), LinkedIn has created a platform in the sense of what the word used to mean — a way of mixing, mashing, repurposing and sharing your data. Think Flickr, not Facebook.

The LinkedIn platform, known as the LinkedIn Intelligent Application Platform, consists of two parts, a way for developers to build application that run inside your LinkedIn account (via OpenSocial) and the far more useful and interesting part — ways to pull your LinkedIn data out and use it elsewhere.

As an example of the second half of LinkedIn’s new platform, the company has announced a partnership with Business Week which will see LinkedIn data pulled into the Business Week site. For instance, if you land on a Business Week article about IBM, the site will then look at your LinkedIn profile (assuming you’ve given it permission to do so) and highlight the people you know at IBM. Call it six degrees of Business Week, but it does something Facebook has yet to do — it connects your data with the larger web.

With Beacon having recently blown up in Facebook’s face — something that’s become a trend for the site, violate privacy, weather user backlash, violate privacy, weather user backlash, violate privacy, weather user backlash — LinkedIn’s new platform couldn’t come at a better time. Frankly, it reminds us of the good old days when the data you stored on websites was actually yours and you could pull it out and do interesting things with it.

Many of the gritty details about the new APIs haven’t been released yet, but we can tell you that the LinkedIn platform uses REST-based APIs and will have access to data like your profile, your network, other LinkedIn profiles, network feeds and more. So far LinkedIn hasn’t released anything detailing the actual API methods.

And never fear, if you’re not a developer or programmer, LinkedIn has promised it will “widgetize” the more popular API-based apps, which means cut and paste code will be available for pulling your LinkedIn data into whatever site you’d like — possibly even Facebook.

For those of you that actually find value in sending your social network connections virtual piña coladas and the like, don’t worry, the LinkedIn platform includes a component for developers to build and run OpenSocial powered applications within the LinkedIn interface. However, all applications will need to approved by LinkedIn, so it’s more likely we’ll see useful stuff like conference calendars or job listing apps than virtual drink swapping.

If the promise of an API isn’t enough for you, LinkedIn has also unveiled some changes to the site which are live right now. A new “company news” feed can be embedded in your LinkedIn profile page to pull in hot news about relevant companies based on your profile and connections.

Your profile page also has three new modules which can be embedded in your account (this is how internal applications built on the LinkedIn platform will be added as well). The new People Search, Job Search and Answers modules are largely self-explanatory, except perhaps the last, which pulls in question and answers in from other LinkedIn members on whatever topics you specify.

LinkedIn may lack some of the buzz and magazine cover hype of Facebook, but kudos to LinkedIn for taking inspiration from APIs like Flickr’s rather than the much touted, but still essentially useless, Facebook platform.

To be continued the services/platforms Integration in the Web 2.0 World, or it will be stopped by OpenSocial?

A bit of brainstorming 2.0 :)

Just posted this article about LinkedIn's revolution (APIs, new UI and features), and thought: is this world going towards the 2.0 Services integration or every start-up is gonna reinvent the wheel each time it needs to add a new (for it) 2.0 and secondary feature to its service offer?

This time I have a doubt, since I read about LinkedIn's new PEOPLE SEARCH feature. Honestly I did not understand well if they (LinkedIn) call by "people search" just the same but enhanced search on LinkedIn (so it should have been called LinkedIn Users Search, not people- search), or it's gonna be a new "external links for <LinkedIn User>" cool feature?

The idea is easy- why LinkedIn could not partner let's say with Spock (spock.com, the new people search engine 2.0) about this?

LinkedIn could have a "See another web data/ references about Name + Surname", powered by Spock engine?

The both services (LinkedIn and Spock) are very 2.0 and the both were listed in the 10 start-ups to watch in 2008 by Wired News.

LinkedIn is a King of the Professional Networking on-line, but also Spock is not "a surprise", it's a very serious and already appreciated by the 2.0 World platform- I believe it will soon power people-searches maybe of the most important Web Search Engines, and it's for sure Spock's one of the best application could be to feed another 2.0 services, for example Social Networks!

An anti-social as a very popular social service? :) Get Enemybook for your Facebook account!

Enemybook is an anti-social utility that disconnects you to the so-called friends around you

- is this anti-social service a beginning of the Social 2.0 concept? :)

Enemybook remedies the one-sided perspective of Facebook, by allowing you to manage enemies as well as friends. With Enemybook you can add people as Facebook enemies, specify why they are your enemies, notify your enemies, see who lists you as an enemy, and even become friends with the enemies of your enemies.

I want to know if it will be possible to POKE the enemies. That would be really crazy! ;) The only thing is that I have no enemies as far as I know... or not too much of them. However I'll install this as an APPLICATION FOR FACEBOOK.

In 2008 I will... another great Facebook application- add it to your profile!

I've been just invited by one my friend to check the "In 2008..." application/ plug-in for Facebook, that's a Top 5 Goals for the Next Year, to fill in and to add the list to your Facebook Profile.

My list is already on my profile there, but I'll snapshot also here the initial version of it :) There is nothing special- just my SOCIAL NETWORKING goals, since it's a Facebook I will list.

Spock FAQ: Change to Spock Power Users Group- limited access to it now

The Spock Power Users Group on Google Groups has become a limited-access group, dedicated to Brainstorming 2.0 with the people interested to improve Spock, the first People Search Engine 2.0 on the Web.

Jay, Group creator and moderator, has explained this change to the Group Members:

I have made this group more exclusive since now only you and people invited by you or Spock will be able to talk on this group. I want to really have this group for discussing future roadmap, confidential ideas, etc.

In order to do that, I do not think it makes to share such private ideas and thoughts with everyone except the most trusted of Spock users. Which are you.

btw, apart from this group that will be used for brainstorming 2.0 with Power Users, there are two other places for Spock fans, supporters and just curious people:

So everybody will find the proper place to speak about Spock, right? :)

The very first Spock application/plug-in for Facebook, by David J. Hinson

It's only few days ago I met David on Facebook, when I was testing his nice application/ plug-in for LinkedIn on Facebook and asked some question about it from David.

Then the idea to dig for a possible application of Spock to Facebook was born, so after a quick brainstorming with Dave, I created a new topic on  Spock Facebook Group, dedicated to this subject- An application (plug-in) for Facebook- what's the most important feature of Spock to embed?.

There weren't yet any comments from the part of Group members, but today it's already appeared THE FIRST SPOCK PLUG-IN FOR FACEBOOK, created, as expected :), by David Hinson. And I see now this update from David on his News Spock page- "David J. Hinson is finished with his Spock FB application", of yesterday.

So become also you its early adopter, try this new application by David- http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=16174235141

and then please tell us your opinion about it, on the discussion board linked to the application, or on the Forum of the Spock's Group on Facebook.
