Your Digital Signature on Facebook, a Certificate of being a Human!

The next release of our Spock application/ plugin for Facebook, and it now supports the direct integration (via "attachment") with the Messaging system of Facebook!

You can now attach your Spock Profile's summary as a "Digital Signature of a Human" to the messages you send on Facebook! When you compile a message there, the URL "Add Spock Signature" appears below the message-edit box, if you have SPOCK application installed for your profile on Facebook.

Try it! We gonna participate in the fight for the best and the most useful plug-in for Facebook, if such classification could exist :) Here is an example-

For now, you'll need to SETUP you Spock Application on Facebook, by going to MyApps serction and selecting Spock application. It's needed provide your original Spock Profile URL to that application and save this your profile settings on Facebook.

In the future it will be better integrated with Spock.

Here is an example of what to setup and where-

What does your birth date mean?

What does your birth date mean? an application on Facebook

It's another funny application on Facebook.

My result is-

You're so intuitive, it's like you have senses beyond just the 5 senses humans have. You connect with others freely and easily - and you tend to have many good friends. Warm and caring, it's hard for you to close your heart to anyone. For people you are a shoulder they can lean on, a shoulder of love and affection.

Seems to be quite true? :)

What Animal Are You?

What Animal Are You? an application on Facebook

It's another funny application on Facebook.

My result is-

You're a Wolf

You're independent, strong-willed & often misunderstood. Very few people truly understand you. You're extremely attached to the significant few you love and respect. You often find yourself as a loner, but you eagerly seek the comfort of your pack mates.

Who is the most visible (on the web) Who's Who in the World in 2008, by Google? ;)

Google knows everything you'll say? So ask Google for

Who is the most visible Who's Who in the World in 2008?

At least today, and at least to me, Google replies in this way:

Well, what can I say? Google seems to know it better! ;)

The Spock API: Search API + People API

http://www.spock.com/api

The Spock API

The Spock Profile API is a standards-based method for obtaining Spock search results. To obtain access to the Spock API, users must obtain an API Key.

The Spock Profile API is read-only, and returns results in XML. Results can include text, URLs, and pictures. The API provides two options for querying the data:

  • search.xml: This query method finds a set of Spock IDs given a set of criteria.
  • person.xml: This query method allows for request of detailed information for one or more people.

Use

To execute a query the API must be supplied with an API Key and any non-required fields can be left blank. Allowed fields for use in generating a query are provided in the tables below.

Search API

Inputs

The API must be supplied with at least one of the following: a general query string, a name query, a tag query, or a location query.

Social Graph API, from Google

With so many websites to join, users must decide where to invest significant time in adding their same connections over and over. For developers, this means it is difficult to build successful web applications that hinge upon a critical mass of users for content and interaction. With the Social Graph API, developers can now utilize public connections their users have already created in other web services. It makes information about public connections between people easily available and useful.

If you don't know what the social graph is...

Explaining what the “Social Graph” is to your Executives

by Jeremiah Owyang, Web Strategist

Many are talking about the Social Graph at the technical level, leaving many business folks with many questions. The following, using clear business language (void of tech speak), will explain what is the Social Graph, why it matters, and what you should do.

Executive Summary
The Social Graph is the representation of our relationships. Today, these graphs define our personal, family, or business communities on social websites. Unfortunately, we’re duplicating our same Social Graph on multiple websites, resulting in inaccurate data and time spent managing it. Despite many challenges, our Social Graphs should be self-managed from a single trusted source, replicated to websites of our choosing, thus resulting in accurate, efficient, relationship management.

Those that ignore social media critics risk being blindsided!

Those that ignore social media critics risk being blindsided by negative comments, experts say

January 31, 2008 (Computerworld) Target Corp. found itself at the center of a blogosphere brouhaha this month when it brushed aside complaints against it lodged on a blog post by the executive director of an organization that monitors the effects of advertising on kids. Target doesn't respond to comments from "nontraditional" media outlets, she noted on her blog.

A Google search in the U.S. for "Dell support" brings up a scathing post -- complete with an obscenity in the title -- from a blogger on the first page of results, which has at times been posted higher in the search results than the organization's own support Web page.

These were two of a handful of examples cited during an online presentation today by Forrester Research Inc. and Dow Jones & Co. on why companies should devote more resources to monitoring what is being said about them and their products in the Web 2.0 world.

Companies must listen to the Web 2.0 world

• creare una community di persone, progetti e startup web2.0 italiane e attrarre i talenti e le competenze migliori nel settore;

• creare uno spazio di informazione e discussione sui social media al di fuori degli ambienti accademici;
• creare un luogo di incontro e di aggregazione per chi opera o e’ interessato ai nuovi scenari della comunicazione online;

Osservatorio Enterprise 2.0

·          analizzare l'evoluzione delle Intranet in Italia e la loro convergenza con i Sistemi Informativi nella prospettiva del Virtual Workspace;

·          comprendere lo stato e i trend nell'applicazione delle nuove tecnologie Web 2.0 nelle imprese e Pubbliche Amministrazioni in Italia ed identificare gli effetti sui processi, le relazioni ed i modelli di impresa;

·          identificare ed analizzare l'impatto dell’applicazione delle nuove tecnologie sulle architetture ICT, con particolare riferimento alla diffusione di logiche SOA;

·          individuare ed interpretare casi interessanti di applicazioni in modo da permettere un confronto significativo con le Best Practice a livello italiano ed internazionale;

Spread the word

Time and Place
Date:
 Friday, February 15, 2008
Time
 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Location:
 IULM, Aula Seminari
Street:
 Via Carlo Bo 1
City/Town:
 Milano, Italy

Description

E’ davvero possibile gestirli?

Ospiti confermati:

- Alberto Abruzzese - IULM
- Sasha monotti - BLOGMETER
- Mafe de Baggis - DAIMON
- Francesco D'Orazio - ZZUB
- Elisa Perillo - ZOOPPA
- Pier Ludovico Bancale - BOOTB

Porta chi vuoi!

What is Agork?

All of our applications are extremely easy to manage, yet very powerful. Again, that's the way web goes. There's no time time for complex applications requiring hours of setup and customization. Mobile World Congress 2008: Top 5 areas to watch in Barcelona

received via e-mail

The Hot Topics will include-

  1. Ubiquitous networks and the path to 4G
  2. Competing with the iPhone
  3. Entertainment takes center stage at Mobile Backstage
  4. Linux in the limelight
  5. Mobile banking reality check

Ubiquitous networks and the path to 4G

Operators are still in the midst of upgrading their networks to 3G but vendors are already touting the benefits of LTE, WiMAX and other 4G-type technologies. In fact, a keynote session on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. will be devoted to "Ubiquitous Networks" and feature speakers such as Carl-Henric Svanberg, CEO of Ericsson and Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm.
Last year we heard a lot about WiMAX, which was surprising since this conference was once a GSM-dominated event. This year we expect to hear more on the business case for WiMAX and how the technology is fitting for underserved areas of the world. "There are plenty of parts of the world without broadband," says Scott Wickware, vice president of carrier networks, marketing and strategy at Nortel. "This is a cheaper way to offer broadband."

Competing with the iPhone

Unlike last year's show, which took place a few short weeks after Apple unveiled the iPhone, all is quiet on the handset front leading into the Mobile World Congress. While Motorola mulls whether it should spin off its beleaguered handset business, other phone makers wonder how they can begin to top last year's showstopper.
"One of the lessons of last year learned from iPhone is that there is a new bar for how loud you have to be to cut through the clutter," Compete's wireless research director Miro Kazakoff said. "If there were any likely hit phones coming out at the show this year, the industry would have heard something by now."
The only high-profile launch slated for the show is Nokia's S60 Touch UI, which the company will be demonstrating at its booth. Rumor has it that Nokia will be making use of accelerometers for the user interface--those are the same type of sensors that Apple uses in the iPhone to automatically adjust the screen display from normal to landscape mode. The S60 Touch UI is a testament to the growing number of touch sensitive phones on the market. The feature is close to becoming a requirement on high-end feature phones that look to compete with the iPhone.

Entertainment takes center stage at Mobile Backstage

The face of mobile content turns ruggedly handsome at Mobile World Congress--Academy Award winner and independent film pioneer Robert Redford will keynote Mobile Backstage, the one-day mobile entertainment conference produced by the GSM Association in collaboration with Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. The event takes place Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Redford is no stranger to mobile--in late 2006, his non-profit Sundance Institute launched the Sundance Film Festival: Global Short Film Project, an initiative spotlighting three-to-five minute short films made exclusively for screening on mobile handsets. The project was showcased at last year's event in Barcelona.  Also, in January, Verizon Wireless added short-form programming from cable's Sundance Channel to its V Cast Video service.
Redford's Mobile Backstage keynote promises to focus on the potential of the mobile platform as a channel for independent filmmakers to reach a worldwide audience. Mobile Backstage will also spotlight acclaimed actress and director Isabella Rossellini, who will discuss her role in a new series of mobile shorts titled Green Porno--a name no doubt guaranteed to land untold copies of this preview issue in subscribers' spam folders--as well as Black Eyed Peas rapper will.i.am, who will explore the future of mobile music.

Linux in the limelight

inux enters Mobile World Congress 2008 with all the momentum in the world. First the open source platform reshaped the U.S. software market in late 2007 via web services giant Google's introduction of its Linux-based Android operating system. Next, in the waning days of January 2008, Nokia bid $153 million to acquire Norwegian Linux-based software provider Trolltech, a move the handset kingpin said will galvanize its cross-platform software strategy for mobile devices and desktop applications, enabling development of third-party apps optimized for the Internet, across its device portfolio and on PCs. Just days later, European semiconductor firm NXP and French mobile Linux components supplier Purple Labs announced their joint development of a 3G Linux feature phone boasting video telephony, music playback, high-speed Internet browsing and video streaming--the first of its kind with a price tag under $100. And finally, industry consortium The LiMo Foundation said it will release its first mobile Linux platform in March.

Mobile banking reality check

If last year was the year of overblown expectations for mobile financial services, then 2008 will be a year of the inked deal but still little progress on consumer uptake, according to senior analyst Emmet Higdon of Forrester Research. Mobile banking and mobile payments are still technologies in search of a problem, which could be just what the industry players are looking to figure out at next week's Mobile World Congress. "People expected mobile banking to take off much more quickly than it has," Higdon said. "People are trying mobile banking services and discovering that it's kind of neat, but it's hard to read transactions on that little, tiny screen."
Carriers and financial institutions are still trying to figure out what consumers are interested in doing financially on their mobile phones. Forrester's polling suggests that customers, themselves, aren't really sure what they want to do with mobile banking. The problem could be a lack of imagination. Right now, U.S. banks are encouraging users to use the exact same services on their mobiles that they can already use online. "That's fine," Higdon cautions. "But it doesn't make it compelling enough to make a large percentage of their customers to try or adopt these mobile solutions. We are still waiting to see how that experience on the mobile could be different. We are still waiting on that killer app for mobile banking."

CittadiniDigitali.it (ricevuta via e-mail)-

Cari Cittadini Digitali,

Ora tocca a noi.

Important Stuff: Managing Your Online Identity

Managing Your Online Identity

from spock web-> Important Stuff-> Managing Your Online Identity

How people find you is important - whether it is making a first impression for a first meeting, an interview, a sales call, or even a date. With the internet increasingly being used as a tool to search for information about people, how you are found on the web more important than ever. Search engines like Google and Yahoo! provide individuals with no ability to shape how their information appears in a "search result" when someone types in their name. Spock does.

Spock can help you to manage how you are found, and most importantly what is found about you. The first step towards managing your online identity is putting the information you want seen about you online. That allows you to control what is being said about you. The second step is staying up to date on new information about you as it appears. Spock allows you to do just that.

With Spock you can:

  • Claim your search result so people can contact you easily
  • Add relevant data to ensure that people find the right information about you
  • Encourage friends to verify your search result to make it more credible
  • Sign up for alerts to get notified every time new information is found about you

From there, Spock will handle the rest. Our unique search technologies will ensure that when people search for you on Spock you will not only be found, but found the way you want to be found. More importantly, Spock search results will appear in leading search engines like Google, ensuring that the search result you have created for yourself is the one that gets noticed as opposed to other pages or other people.

Managing your online identity is no small task. If you have an issue with your online identity or are concerned about identity fraud, consider visiting one of Spock's partners below.

Web 2.0: cosa ne pensano i CIO?

Web 2.0 - Indagine sulla nuova internet, by Data Manager

open API .... in teoria . . . but where is the source? where are the logs?

Auguri a Microsoft Italia!

Do you allow networkers who close off their network to ohers?

Found just by case this fantastic question on LinkedIn Q&A today, by Jan Simpson.

it's almost my favorite subject- to keep CLOSED or OPENED our Networks on LinkedIn? :)

LinkedIn Questions and Answers- Open Social Networks

And my answer is-

With all my respect to your professional experience, Jan...

It's just the opposite, the most "normal" Business Networkers usually have doubts if to be "OPEN Networker" is a normal thing for LinkedIn or a it's mistaken approach for the PROFESSIONAL/ BUSINESS Networking.
We are here on LinkedIn, not on Facebook, Spock, MySpace, right?

The main principle of LinkedIn's STRONG Network is to have TRUSTED CONTACTS.
In terms of Professional Networking, Strong Network is for sure not the same as Huge Network, and an Open Network!

And this Network of Trusted Contacts is needed to pass the messages from one network peer to any other peer, through their trusted peers- connections. It's NOT the sense of LinkedIn to show the content of our Networks- here we do not poke each other just to "get poked back", right?

Here we:
a) Search for a needed person
b) Contact the needed person through our TRUSTED peers.

in order to do this, there is no need to browse the Network of anybody!
If we need to connect with more TRUSTED people we've worked in the past with or we have any other kind of relations with, we can:
a) search by company/ school name- colleagues/ classmates etc.
b) search by location
c) search by any keyword of interest.

Why I am sure about what do I tell?
Look I am myself a co-founder and a VP of a LinkedIn Club of Italy, that's a recognized by LinkedIn.com Club for its Evangelism effort in the promotion of LinkedIn in Italy and Europe. I am also the Web/ Web 2.0 manager and PR 2.0 officer of the Club (means the most "available" person in the Board)... and I have my Network... CLOSED. it's for the years already!

in the beginning it was opened, but then SEVERAL VIP people asked me-
...Andrey, I do NOT want to be BROWSED by your other peers, we are not in a "Supermarket of Contacts". If you want to be connected with me, plz only pass the serious messages to me, no spam, and please do not show me in your Network. One who needs ME, will find me via search form!

and this was told by the people I consider very important VIP connections, maybe the most heavily networked in my Network :) (those who have 10- peers, and those who are very big bosses).

So I was thinking A LOT, spoken with tons of people in my Club (we are ~4.000 Club Members today), and I've come to a conclusion that the Network must be PROTECTED, since it's NOT the Goal for Professional Networking on LinkedIn to show to everyone here around who's in my Network! it's to protect THEM. I am not hiding something from myself- come and contact me- I am hiding them since I am not "a supermarket of connections" :)

instead on Facebook- you are welcome to write on my wall, to poke me etc :) I have tons of contacts there and I am very happy about the Extremal Social Communication that we do on Facebook.

then it's even better on SPOCK.com- here the GOAL is to establish the relations b/w all the people in the World. And I have hundreds of people in my open network, I am connected to each of this person via a relation tag like "colleague", "friend", "linkedin peer". But Spock is a People Search Engine- it's goal is to SEARCH on top of this META- data.

LinkedIn is not a Search Engine, it's a Professional Networking Tool. I hope everybody will agree about this statement?
So I always try to keep LinkedIn for my professional/ business goals only.

Just in case you're sick of hearing about LinkedIn - this week, I've got something different on Connections.

My guest is Jay Bhatti, co-founder of Spock.com, a new 'People Search Engine', which launched to public Beta six months ago. And no, there are no pointy ears involved :>)

S.P.O.C.K is an acronym for Single Point Of Contact by Keyword. (suspiciously convenient, I know - but you HAVE to give them credit for scoring the domain)

Porta chi vuoi!

Inside Mobile and Wireless: Why Ease-of-Use Matters in Mobile, by J. Gerry Purdy

Received via e-mail from J. Gerry Purdy, VP & Chief Analyst of Frost & Sullivan.

Why Ease-of-Use Matters in Mobile
February
2008

I'm really impressed with all the new wireless handsets that have come to market in the past year - from the Apple iPhone to the latest BlackBerry to the new Centro from Palm (as well as many others). All higher-end phones are getting more features and are able to do a lot more than just a year or two ago. But with all these advances, there are still major issues regarding ease-of-use that have not been addressed.

I currently have three phones: an Apple iPhone, a RIM BlackBerry 8820, and a Palm Centro. Each has some advantages, but also some disadvantages when it comes to ease-of-use. Let me point out some of the ease-of-use issues to give you a better idea why ease-of-use matters so much in mobile.

The RIM BlackBerry has a wonderful new 8800 series with a stylized shiny surface, improved keyboard, integrated GPS, and Wi-Fi. However, the BlackBerry user interface is based on a very basic menu system that evolved from early renditions of BlackBerry. It's solid as a rock technically but not nearly as easy-to-use as the Palm-based Treo/Centro or the iPhone.

I have included eight companion figures to this column to demonstrate a number of key ease-of-use features side by side. It may appear that I'm picking on the BlackBerry, but it's simply not as easy to use as the Palm Treo/Centro or Apple iPhone. RIM clearly needs to update its entire user interface with a more robust, easy-to-use environment, perhaps using Linux as a core, and a robust UI that will compete better in the market.

The Palm Treo and Centro has been the stalwart for ease-of-use for the past five years. Palm has always focused on the minimum number of keystrokes to complete a task. The entire menu system is very intuitive, and the speed dialing options are better than on even the iPhone. Notice also that Palm-based devices color the numeric key pad differently on the alphabetic keyboard to assist in dialing, but more important is the display of a standard 10-key numeric keypad on the display. Apple does this as well, but BlackBerry doesn't (or, if they do, I couldn't find it).

Probably the easiest to use system on the market is the Apple iPhone. The user interface is natural, meaning most people can figure out how to use it simply by looking at the display and selecting what they want to do. But, while it's clearly the easiest system to use, I've included a couple of examples of where they didn't get it right - at least not yet.

Apple needs to adopt more of Web user interface style outside the Web application with a "back arrow" in the upper left so that you can always go back a level from wherever you are in the system interface by hitting the back arrow in the upper left, just like you do using Web browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer. And, while the iPhone on-screen keyboard does present word completion options (very good), you don't get the tactile feedback as you do with a physical keyboard. Thus, I believe that Apple will create an iPhone with a real keyboard at some point.

The Windows Mobile platform is currently running on Palm (700w), Samsung BlackJack, and Motorola Q, among others. It has an "OK" user interface, but you have to launch applications through the Start key, which is similar to Windows on the desktop, but somehow seems unnatural on a handheld. What Microsoft has done in Version 6 is make a lot of integration seamless so that it does more for the user. However, Windows Mobile just doesn't seem to be as easy to use at the iPhone or Palm-based products.

It appears that users somehow seem to adapt to a particular device even though it may be unnatural or not intuitive. Take the once popular RAZR. The five-way key made users crazy trying to remember what each one did at any particular time. But users seemed to like it when it first came out because it was so thin and had a lot of market momentum. But just a couple of years later, the entire handset world moved on to much more intuitive, graphically pleasing, and more powerful interfaces like the iPhone.

Going forward, we expect to see more work done on making handheld systems even easier to use than they are today. We'll see more service integration so that one application will seamlessly integrate with another. Setting up appointments in your calendar while you're in email is still difficult (Good Technology seems to have done this the best so far). And getting true seamless synchronization between the important information on your desktop, the Web, and your mobile handset is still very difficult to achieve, although folks like SoonR are working on solving that problem.

In 2025, people will look back at the handheld systems we used in 2008 and wonder how did we ever put up with them. Voice recognition, integrated services, and very intuitive interfaces will be the norm - not the special case that we have today. Thus, ease-of-use is, and will continue to be, very important in mobile. Kudos to those who have made so many breakthroughs over the past couple of years. But we look forward to seeing all major platforms much easier to use in the next few years.

  • la gamma dei prodotti e dei servizi offerti, in termini di infrastruttura hardware e software, servizi sistemistici, software applicativi, servizi di system integration e servizi di business consulting (portafoglio prodotti/servizi);

  • i rivenditori di base;
  • i rivenditori sistemisti;
  • le software house e gli Indipendent Software Vendor (ISV);
  • le software house e integratori di pacchetti di terzi;
  • i system integrator verticali;
  • i system integrator generalisti.

  • rivenditori locali; si tratta di piccoli rivenditori che si rivolgono prevalentemente ad un mercato di micro/piccole imprese locali e, in parte, anche al mercato consumer (molti rivenditori locali si configurano anche come negozi rivolti ai consumatori finali);

I rivenditori sistemisti

  • software house e ISV focalizzati sulle micro/piccole imprese; si tratta di operatori che offrono prevalentemente pacchetti software elementari (ad esempio, sistemi per la gestione della contabilità, delle paghe, ecc.) ad imprese di micro/piccole dimensioni e, in alcuni casi, anche a professionisti (ad esempio, commercialisti, consulenti del lavoro, ecc.). Gli operatori principali appartenenti a questa categoria hanno sviluppato un proprio canale commerciale e distributivo, costituito da un numero molto elevato di piccoli rivenditori, con l’obiettivo di raggiungere il numero maggiore di potenziali clienti;
  • software house e ISV focalizzati sulle medie imprese; si tratta di operatori che commercializzano pacchetti software più complessi (ad esempio, sistemi gestionali nazionali, sistemi verticali, sistemi sviluppati ad hoc, applicazioni Web, ecc.) e si rivolgono prevalentemente al mercato delle medie imprese;

I system integrator verticali

I system integrator generalisti

Telecom Italia goes for Mobile Payments

TI unveils M-Payment

Italian telco Telecom Italia has unveiled a solution that will let customers use their mobile phone like a credit card.

Working closely with banks and finance companies, customers of Telecom Italia's mobile unit TIM will soon be able to make payments using their cellphones.

Telecom Italia's mobile payment system leverages the phone's SIM card, a chip that now has sufficient memory to perform operations previously only possible for small computers.

To use the service, customers must first go to their bank and pair their cell phone number with a bank card (either a credit card or a pre-pay card). Once the card and phone have been paired, the customer can use the phone to make purchases, remotely manage their bank account, buy travel tickets (m-ticketing), and authorize payments from their bank account (m-banking).

In addition, TIM customers will be able to use their phones to manage their virtual 'Mobile Wallet,' where they store all of their credit cards. Once a digital version of a credit card has been stored on the SIM Card, customers send a text message to a protected number to authorize payments, make purchases, or pay bills remotely. A personal code and the card PIN number are required to authorize transactions. Customers will also be able to download virtual versions of their loyalty cards (such as frequent flyer cards) and travel season tickets.

Telecom Italia expects to roll out mobile phone-based payment services this year.

Telecom Italia has also begun trials of NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, which makes it possible to use mobile phones to pay for road tolls or public transport by approaching a POS, car park exit, public transport vehicle or even cinema. Cellphones and SIM cards equipped with this new application are expected to launch next year.

Voice Mobility Introduces Google Apps: the same change that Salesforce.com once brought to the CRM market

Voice Mobility Introduces Google Apps™

UCN Vmerge is the first UC solution for Google Apps in the Workplace and Campus Markets

Vancouver, BC, CANADA – February 14, 2008Voice Mobility International, Inc. (TSX: VMY, OTCBB: VMII and FWB: VMY), a Vancouver-based developer and provider of carrier and enterprise enhanced messaging solutions, today announced its new Google Apps™ functionality, a first in the enterprise market.

Voice Mobility’s UCN Vmerge is now integrated with the Google Apps solution suite to provide workplace and campus customers full collaboration functionality. The Google Apps suite includes Gmail, Google Talk, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Contacts, Mobile apps and other collaboration tools all using the workplace or campus domain. UCN Vmerge adds unified communications to complete messaging, collaboration, calendaring and presence functionality.

Enterprise clients want the ability to enable their enterprise voice and fax communications to work seamlessly with Gmail. UCN Vmerge allows full on-premise or hosted enterprise PBX integration with a hosted personalized Gmail service. Industry analysts have calculated that the average IT manager spends 75% of their budget on infrastructure maintenance, leaving a small amount for new technology. With Google Apps, free or premium service combined with the cost-effective UCN Vmerge solutions, IT managers can roll out new technology to keep pace with consumer technology.

“By integrating UCN Vmerge with Google Apps, workplace and campus customers have price-effective options for collaboration functionality,” said Mike Seeley, Voice Mobility’s VP of Global Sales. “This is like deploying a full Microsoft® Exchange® server, Active Directory® and Office Communication Server® at a fraction of the cost. No longer are customers forced to utilize expensive on-premise solutions from providers like Microsoft for collaboration functionality."

"The market has asked for this type of solution and Voice Mobility is proud to be the first to bring it to the market. This new functionality will bring the same change to the workplace and campus markets that Salesforce.com® brought to the CRM market. Combine this functionality with our mobile applications and we can deliver unified communications on all Symbian™, Windows Mobile® or Blackberry® devices.”

UCN Vmerge enables users to access voice, fax and email messages directly from their Gmail account and synchronize all messages across all their devices — in essence, gluing the Google Apps to the enterprise telephony infrastructure. For example, if an email is heard via the user’s mobile device, it will be show as ‘read’ in their Gmail account. Other functionality enables users to:

  • Send faxes directly from their Gmail account;
  • Receive voice and fax messages in their Gmail account;
  • Record and deposit office conversations in their Gmail account;
  • Manage live calls from their desktop;
  • Click-to-dial internal and external numbers from any Google application;
  • Synchronize call logs;
  • Import Google Contacts into UCN Vmerge for remote access;
  • Utilization of least cost routing available from the enterprise PBX;

As is standard with all Voice Mobility’s UCN solutions, included are message waiting indication and message notifications, mobile workforce integration and offline access to the user’s inbox. MilanIN, il social network degli imprenditori lombardi

by Raffaele Mauro

Networking: It's easier than you think!

Effective Networking Is Easier Than You Think

Networking is not what most people think it is. It's not a contest for the largest Rolodex. Effective networking is more akin to friends helping friends make new friends.

Last week I gave a presentation at a leadership seminar sponsored by the IT Executives Accountability Group. The purpose of this organization is to create small groups of peer executives who can mentor each other, act as sounding boards for ideas and concerns, and provide real-world connectedness in an increasingly virtual business world.  Because the members of this organization are committed to forging bonds that they hope will last their entire careers, they understand the importance of earned trust and mutual support.

Earned trust and mutual support distinguish what I refer to as a “neo-Rolodex networker” (e.g. someone with a long list of superficial contacts in email or on LinkedIn) and a truly effective networker.

Prior to email, a large Rolodex was the sign of a well-connected person. Back then, getting to know people took time, effort and a personal touch: face-to-face meetings, phone calls and hand-written letters. Those connections were so vital that some corporate heads of sales and marketing organizations negotiated ownership of their Rolodexes in their employment contracts.

Today, building a very large list of contacts is exceedingly simple with email and social networking systems.  The problem is that many executives try to equate their electronic “neo-rolodex” of names with successful networking. They think the bigger the list, the better. However, almost any sales leader will tell you that large lists of easily gathered contacts are simply “prospects”  and that it is only through building a relationship with each contact, one at a time, that you can turn them into clients.  The old Rolodex was valuable because of the time and care the owner put into building and cultivating the individual relationships those cards represented.

So if an effective network is not a large list of contacts, what is it?

The IT Executives Accountability Group is on the right track in building on the power of relationships. You build relationships through communication and earn trust by following through on commitments and holding confidences. But the core of an effective network is extending the power of your relationships into what the Chinese refer to as “gu?nxì" (can someone help with a pronunciation for this), which translates to “networks of mutual support.” That is, when you offer assistance to others without demanding them to reciprocate, you create an intrinsic bond with the recipient of your favor, and that bond builds a desire by the recipient to help you and others as well. Gu?nxì is so central to Chinese culture that the standard acceptance response to an apology is “meiyou gu?nxì,” which roughly means “doesn’t have gu?nxì (implications)”.

Interestingly, the Chinese also refer to gu?nxì as the larger network of networks, all connected together in support of one another. It's similar to the Russian “blat”, the Middle Eastern “wasta”, and the more recent American concept of “pay it forward,” whereby the recipient of a good deed repays the a  favor by assisting someone other than the original giver. It is this unanticipated reciprocity that is the strength of an effective network: As you help others, you build your network, and those who help you may not be the same ones you have helped.

The Chinese philosopher Confucius described this benefit in a proverb: “Is it not a great joy to have friends coming from afar?

So an effective leader builds and relies on an effective network, which is focused more on relationships than on organization or structure.

Which brings us all the way back to effective networking being like friends helping friends. When meeting new people, whether on a Web 2.0 online interface, on LinkedIn, at work or at a technology conference, you will build a more effective network if you spend time with each person and start to build relationships with them than if you simply gather tons of business cards. The next step is to follow-up with each new person you meet to thank them for spending time with you and to cement your nascent relationship by referring your new contact to an article, website or lead related to your initial conversation. As you continue to share helpful information back and forth, you build that bond of gu?nxì that is the strength of your effective and growing network.

Thank you again for all of your comments and ideas!

Tips for Pursuing a New Career Outside IT

Life in IT can be thankless, but you don't have to suffer. A 25-year IT veteran turned professional coach offers advice on how she and many other technical professionals found fulfillment and fortune outside IT.

Seven Tips for Pursuing a New Career Outside IT

February 13, 2008CIO — Let's face it: Life in IT can be thankless. Your work often goes unnoticed, unless you do something wrong. You put in long hours, working evenings and weekends. Expectations are high. Users are seldom happy with results.

Believe me, I understand. I spent more than 25 years in IT, having started as a systems developer and ending as director of career development in a high-tech consulting company. As my career in IT evolved, I realized I enjoyed management and staff development more than technical work. After the IT downturn of 2001, I decided to begin a new career as a professional coach.

It's easy to tire of a career in IT. I've talked with dozens of technical professionals who say they are burned out or who no longer feel challenged by their jobs. Many more senior professionals are forced to consider a job outside the field after being laid off and finding it difficult to land a new job, either because their skills aren't in demand or employers don't want to pay for their experience.

You don't have to suffer in IT. If you've ever considered a career outside the profession, the following seven steps will help you make your move. They worked for me and many others, as you'll see.

1. Identify your interests: What do you like to do?

Tom Prince knew he wanted to do something besides sell CRM software when he was Siebel's vice president of sales, but he had no idea what. After he left Siebel in 2002, he and his wife Mary decided to investigate the possibility of opening a restaurant. They loved good food, dined out often and understood their local, Boston-area market well. They partnered with Lorenzo Savona, a former general manager of two chic restaurants in Boston, who had been planning to build a restaurant similar to the one Tom and Mary Prince envisioned. In 2004, they opened Tomasso Trattoria in Southborough, Mass. Today, they also run Panzano Provviste e Vino, a market and wine shop next door to the restaurant.

"There's so much disillusionment in high-tech. You rarely get the feeling that you're selling people something they really want," says Tom Prince. "Here, we're providing something that people actually know and care about—something that people really want. Food affects their sight, their smell, their taste, their touch, all of their senses."

If you don't have a clear idea of what you want to do, start by evaluating your existing position. Make a list of everything you love and hate about your current job. Use those likes and dislikes to form criteria for a new career. Look for opportunities that feature the things you love but not the things you hate. For instance, if you love your job because of your relationship with your clients, look for jobs that focus on customer service. Or, if you love being the expert and sharing your knowledge, teaching is a possibility.

Also think about what you do in your spare time. What do you enjoy doing most? What is it about these activities that makes them enjoyable? If you love dogs, consider starting a boarding, grooming or training business. If you practice yoga, find out what it would take to become an instructor. Brainstorm ways you can make a career out of your passions the way that the Princes did with food.

2. Leverage your strengths: What do you do well?

For 24 years, Norman Daoust worked in corporate IT roles, except during a sabbatical when he focused on his music. Daoust plays fretted instruments—the guitar, electric bass, banjo and mandolin. After three years of trying to make a living as a musician he decided to return to corporate IT, only to remember exactly why he left before: the inability of large, bureaucratic organizations to embrace and manage change. He had to get out, but instead of going back to music, he opted for consulting in his area of expertise, information modeling and systems integration. He prepared for that transition by participating in several consulting workshops. When he was laid off from his corporate job in 2001, he took the leap. Seven years later he has built a successful consulting practice with many clients and the freedom to make his own schedule, including time for his music.

A great tool you can use to identify your strengths is the book StrengthsFinder 2.0. When you buy it, you get a code to take the StrengthsFinder assessment online at no additional cost.

3. Assess your options: What could you do that reflects your interests and leverages your strengths?

Tom McGoldrick performed many roles during his 30 years in IT: systems programmer, project manager, department manager and senior vice president. He left IT in 2002 during a downsizing. When he stepped back to look at his life, he realized how much his career had taken him away from his family. He and his wife Sue Ann decided to look into running their own business.

They considered more than 1,200 different businesses and eventually narrowed the list down to six. One option was inspired by their beloved pet Labrador retriever, Apollo, who had a champion bloodline. They considered breeding dogs, but further research showed they couldn't make a living at it. When Apollo unexpectedly died, they looked for a burial/cremation facility that would provide Apollo with the honor and respect the McGoldricks felt he deserved. They discovered Paws in Heaven and were very pleased with the care and attention Apollo received there.

In 2003, the owners of Paws in Heaven decided to retire, and the McGoldricks bought the business. Tom McGoldrick recognized that the business savvy, technical knowledge and relationship-building skills he had honed over the course of his career in IT would lend themselves well to running and growing their new business. Paws in Heaven perfectly combines McGoldrick's love for animals with his business and technical acumen.

Focusing on your interests and strengths the way McGoldrick did will help you more easily recognize opportunities as they come along and determine whether they're a good fit for you.

4. Try your possibilities on for size: What would this new career really be like?

Technical graphic designer Marissa Rosenfield Smajlaj was shopping at a bookstore in downtown Boston when she came upon a copy of the book Colette's Birthday Cakes by world-renowned specialty cake artist Collette Peters. As she flipped through the pages and admired each cake, she had an epiphany: "I could do this!" she thought. Smajlaj got a part-time job in a bakery to see if she'd enjoy the work. She loved it, decided to go to culinary school and was accepted at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in London. She completed the Le Cordon Bleu Diplome de Patisserie. The following year, she became a pastry chef at a New York City restaurant. She hasn't looked back since.

5. Be open to opportunities: What's out there?

Bill Sobbing didn't start out as an IT professional. In college, he majored in English. When he graduated, he didn't know what he wanted to do with his life. He looked at many different possibilities, but none of them excited him. Eventually, a relative got him a job where the relative was working. When the IT department at Sobbing's company posted an entry-level position, he applied for it and was accepted. Sobbing found a career that interested him and spent the next 20 years working in various IT roles. He enjoyed the work but, like many IT managers, he tired of corporate politics. He decided to become an independent consultant and began working primarily from his home. One morning, he picked up a newspaper and read about a local school, The San Diego Golf Academy, which offers a program in golf course management. He had played golf casually since high school but never considered making it his career. Yet something in the story about the Golf Academy compelled him to check it out. Three years later, Sobbing is general manager of a nine-hole golf course in Phoenix, Ariz. He could never have done it if he hadn't indulged his curiosity.

6. Select the right opportunities: Which are viable?

In 2002, Alan Klug was a senior consultant with KPMG. He enjoyed working with clients, but the consulting industry was suffering from the post-9/11 economic recession at that time. Klug knew future consulting opportunities would be limited and decided to pursue something entrepreneurial. He considered opening a custom closets business, a car wash, and franchising a quick-service restaurant. He developed business plans for each idea, but none of them really grabbed him. Then he came across a small ad in Fortune for 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Intrigued by a company that got paid for taking people's junk off their hands, he says he "researched the heck out of it." He learned that it was a lucrative and fast-growing business with a solid strategy and good management team heading it up.In 2003, he became a 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchisee with four territories. He has since expanded to eight territories. He is on track to become a $2 million business in 2008 and is already thinking about what he might do next. "If an opportunity comes along, don't count it out immediately because it seems too good to be true. Just research it and find all the downsides," he says. "There are plenty of opportunities out there to be exploited."

If you have a couple of options and can't decide between them, take out a sheet of paper and divide it into columns—one for each possibility in question. Write the title of each option at the top of each column. List the pros and cons of each possibility side by side. If neither choice stands out, answer the following questions: What will happen if I pursue this career? What won't happen if I pursue this career? What will happen if I don't pursue this career? What won't happen if I don't pursue this career? Those four questions sound similar, but they're all slightly different and designed to help you explore the nuances of each possibility. Use your answers to those questions to decide which option is the best for you.

7. Create a career action plan.

Once you have decided on a career, you can put together a career action plan. This is a simple project plan with tasks, deliverables and target dates. It includes a long-term career objective (from six months to three years) with short-term tasks and deliverables for the next three months.

If your career objective is, for example, to launch your own consulting business next year, one short-term task to perform might be to talk with several consultants to learn more about what it's like. Other tasks might include investigating what areas of specialization are in greatest demand and what it would take for you to build your expertise in those areas. A deliverable might be to draft a preliminary business plan with a list of potential clients and the financial resources you have available to launch your business. At the end of three months, add new tasks and deliverables for the following three months. This simple approach works well for planning and tracking your progress.

As you begin building your career action plan, answer the following questions:

  • What do I need to accomplish my goal?
  • Do I need education, equipment, office or other space?
  • Do I need hands-on experience?
  • Do I need financial aid?
  • Do I need a mentor or a coach?
  • Who among my friends and acquaintances can provide assistance with my career change? What assistance can they provide: resources, expertise, moral support?

Remember, no one succeeds alone. There's nothing wrong with asking for help. There is something wrong with not asking for help when you need it. In most cases, people are more than willing to lend a hand.

These seven tips come from my own experience as well as the experiences of others. I leveraged my own interests and strengths in training and professional development to move from IT into my coaching business. In my corporate role as director of career development, I coached many IT professionals, from systems developers to executives. In that role, I had the opportunity to try out what would become my new career as a professional coach. Since I wasn't ready to leave my corporate job at the time, I worked with a mentor/coach to develop and implement a business plan that enabled me to remain with my company while I earned my credentials and began to build my coaching and consulting practice. I have been on my own since 2006. I have found great joy and success in my new career, and I wish you the same in your "Life Beyond IT," wherever it may take you.

A presto!
Diego Vicamini

Notizie in breve

Nomi Moduli personalizzabili

a Strategic shift in the heads of Microsoft officers?

It's a good news for the whole computer industry I think-

Microsoft to Share More Technical Secrets

However I have a doubt if this will be so much easy for them :)

  • The broader goal, they said, is to bring Microsoft’s flagship personal computer products — the Windows operating system and Office productivity programs — further into the Internet era of computing.

the base question is: do we need WINDOWS in the Internet era, Steve? :)

It's also from my personal experience- we DON'T need WINDOWS on Mobile Platform! It would be better it didn't exist as Windows Mobile. I tried it myself with the goal to make stress test for Mobile 2.0 OS/application- it was an awful experience guys!

Well how do you see a Vista-XXX mapped to the Internet era M$?

  • Microsoft’s first step will be to put on its Web site 30,000 pages of technical documentation detailing how its Windows desktop and Microsoft server programs communicate and share information.

Ohoho. so nice reading, guys! :)

And some danger is already here-

  • Ray Ozzie, Microsoft’s chief software architect, said that by sharing more information, Microsoft would make it easier for others to write Internet programs that tap into personal information on a PC.

OMG!!! OMFG!!!

and this is at least funny (J/K!)-

  • “The Internet opens up a world of potential innovation,” Mr. Ozzie said. “And I think we’ve just scratched the surface.”

So I wish good luck with many new great openings to M$ developers, partners and etc M$ people. Just imagine you'll soon be scratching the surface of the Internet?

P.S. well, it's not everything so much bad. read the article yourself- as I tell in the beginning I believe it's a good change for the computer industry in a whole. but we'll see it soon!

Avoid Social Spammers! and those will be punished by community anyway (Justice 2.0)

  • It's a long story guys but I will try to be short. It's about SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY on the Web 2.0, or how to survive on Social Web.

Those Power Users on Spock may confirm how long did we expect for Mr. Christian D. to stop behaving like a spammer on Spock... but he wasn't going to stop.

  • So the Community came to punish him for his anti- social behavior: SPAM via fake connections and fake tags.

Spock Community tagged Christian as SPAMMER, SPOCK SPAMMER and SOCIAL SPAMMER. Then we have voted down all his contributions so his spock power has decreased and the most (fake) tags in his profile had disappeared.

More details you may find on Spock Fan Club 2.0 Group on Facebook.

Now, if you open the profile of Mr. D. Christian, you'll see a similar picture:

Social Media spam
so...

DON'T BEHAVE LIKE CHRISTIAN, if you want to survive on SOCIAL WEB!

Justice 2.0, part II- being anti-social you risk to loose your name!

yesterday I was blogging about the first example of Justice 2.0, performed by Spock users community in respect of Social Spammer, bad guy on Spock.

here is it-

today we already have another example.

it's about how one anti-social (social spammer) risks to loose own Identity and even the name. Have a look at this picture, it's still yesterday the man was spamming on Spock, linking himself to everybody as "financial guru" etc, had tons of not-relevant tags in his profile.

and this is what he has now:

Spam on Social Media

DON'T BE SOCIAL SPAMMER! Community will punish you for this !!!

a set of APIs that allow third parties to modify search results on Yahoo

everybody's crazy now with this recent news from Yahoo!

Yahoo Announces Open Search Platform

and there are some points at which I believe Spock (People Search Engine 2.0) could become one of the most important "2.0 partners" for Yahoo! in this project-
"will consist of a set of APIs that allow third parties to modify search results on Yahoo by adding images, structured data and additional deep links."

If I could be the one who decides on Spock- I'd dig in this direction.

I think it's the best way to demonstrate to the world that Spock has some great data that anyone else on the web hasn't!

Porta chi vuoi!

Community Guidelines: Three Rules for Creating Great Content

posted recently by Matt, product and business development VP of Spock, on a Forum of Spock Fan Club 2.0, our Facebook Group-

We do post community guidelines on our site here: http://www.spock.com/do/pages/community_guidelines

Clearly they are far from complete, but they are a start. We would appreciate your help in shaping these guidelines, especially as it relates to inappropriate tagging.

and so the first thing I see when I open the Guidelines page and that I like, is:

Three Rules for Creating Great Content

  • Be Engaging

Try to add content that others will find interesting. This increases how informative a search result becomes, as well as the likelihood that others will vote on your contributions.

  • Be Relevant

Try as much as possible to make your contributions accurate and relevant. Content that is relevant is less likely to be voted down, and makes for a more meaningful search experience.

  • Be Respectful

There are a lot of people on Spock, all with different opinions and sensibilities. Make sure to stop and think about how your contributions may be viewed by others.

and so on. see it yourself
