Inside Mobile and Wireless: Trends in Location Based Services - GSM Mobile World Congress (Barcelona, 2008)
Received via e-mail from J. Gerry Purdy, VP & Chief Analyst of Frost & Sullivan. | GSM Mobile World Congress, Barcelona: Trends in Location Based Services February 2008 There are two really big (and important) tradeshows in the U.S. wireless industry: the spring and fall tradeshows produced by the CTIA. But there's even a larger wireless show in Barcelona each February called the GSMA Mobile World Congress. This year's mega-event was held Feb. 11-14. The conference organizers asked me to moderate a panel on the future of location based services (LBS), which has become a very hot topic. I had two presentations, followed by a panel with five panelists to help discuss the future of LBS: Session: Location, Location, Location (Hall 5, 4:15 pm, Wed, Feb. 13, 2008) Session Presentations: Presentation: "Navigating Your Way Through LBS Experiences" Michael Halbherr, Vice President, Nokia LBS -
Dr. Halbherr discussed now Nokia is going heavily into navigation and will likely become the leading mobile navigation company within a few years. -
He discussed Nokia Maps - designed to help you drive, as well as walk, and share content about the current location with others. He wants your cell phone to answer questions like, "Where I am?" and "Where are you"? And he said Nokia is planning City Guides to help people walk around public places and parks, as well as provide voice-guided walking tours. -
See the slides in the photo link below. Presentation: "Location's Place in the Mobile Internet Revolution" Gummi Hafstinsson, Google -
Gummi related that Google's objective is to organize the world's information, and part of that is to make it useful - and making it useful means to provide full support for users, whether they are using a PC or a mobile phone. -
He related that Google feels location is very important because it makes the results of searches more relevant. -
He related that Google has a number of mobile initiatives in the mobile space including Android, mobile search, mobile maps, and others. Panel: "Which Way to Go - the Right Technology for the Right Application" Panelists: -
Ronen, CTO, Telmap -
Mark White, Founder & CEO, Locatrix Communications -
Stephen Stuut, Chief Executive Officer, TruPosition -
Tom Babin, Knowledge Management & Discovery, Motolabs -
Kanwar Chadha, Co-founder and VP of Marketing, SiRF Technologies Comments by the panelists included: -
Accuracy - it's good enough for personal applications, but watch out for multi-path problems where signals bounce off tall buildings and cause confusion in the algorithms. Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) with server support helps prevent and manage the multi-path problem. -
Hybrid - hybrid GPS with multiple solutions will win out in the long run. Example: A-GPS plus Wi-Fi positioning and S5 for indoor coverage might be an excellent long-term solution. -
Pervasive - with low cost (under $5/unit), we're going to finally find location just about in every device and everywhere - within the next few years. And e911 initiatives (particularly in the US) will continue to help drive adoption. -
Personal Navigation Devices (PND) - the high end of the market with larger screens is still happening, but most of the panelists felt like the cell phone will slowly replace most PNDs over the next 5-7 years. -
Privacy - this was a very big issue by the panel: trying to balance privacy of the individual with need to access by legitimate law enforcement agencies. The "golf option" is still desired by most users (being able to turn it off). But parents want to know "where are the kids"? and law enforcement agencies want to have the ability to track people with proper approvals (court orders). There's challenge to balance individual privacy with things like preventing terrorism. -
Overall - operators coming around to supporting it and cost low enough in the devices that it will be pervasive before too long. | | Gerry Purdy (Moderator), Ronen Soffer (CTO, Telmap), Mark White (CEO, Locatrix), Stephen Stuut (CEO, TruPosition), Tom Babin (MotoLabs), Kanwar Chadha (SiRF), Gummi Hafstinsson (Google) and Dr. Michael Halbherr (Nokia LBS) I am not sure if it's more difficult being a vendor representative or an industry analyst at a large tradeshow like the GSM Mobile World Congress. Everyone spends long hours and meets lots of people. I had a very demanding three days with more than 25 meetings, plus my panel session, in the three days I was there. I told my fiance'e, Alicia, that I hated the grind of having 7-8 meetings a day, rushing from one place to another, and then going out late for dinner (restaurants don't open up until 8:30 or 9 pm in Spain). But there were some golden meetings that seemed to make the entire trip worth it, such as: -
Bango - talked with CEO Ray Anderson about their plan to get real analytics on the wireless market, both to support advertising, as well as network behavior, without invading anyone's privacy. This is challenging but will provide much needed quantification of actually what's happening on wireless networks. -
SNAPin - very clever company that's (initially) handling the most typical customer service inquiries onboard the handset. They have recently added tutorials to reduce the call load, and are going to turn tutorials into revenue generation for new services. -
Cellmania - quietly have created a very profitable company working with wireless operators to deliver content to subscribers. I have always liked their CEO, Ronjon Nag, who went over their recent acquisition of MSX Corp. -
Visto - surprised to see my old friend, Doug Brackbill, the original CEO, has returned to become EVP of Sales & Marketing. This gives them a strong resource that's well liked in the analyst community. -
Dinner - attended a private dinner with a few wireless industry leaders, venture capitalists, and investment bankers at the fabulous Via Venveto restaurant. -
VeriSign - Surpirsed to learn from Chirag Bakshi (VP of Wireless) that VeriSign is spinning out their successful and profitable business. -
RealNetorks - enjoyed very lively interaction with Analisa Roberts at RealNetworks. We discussed their mobile assets including ringtones, mobile music, and what can be done to offer Rhapsody streaming channels on the iPhone and iPod, as well as through the entire wireless ecosystem. I am grateful to be invited by GSM Association to lead a session at their Mobile World Conference. There are many analysts and press and industry executives who would like to be selected to moderate a session. I am also fortunate to know how to lead a good panel through experience and being proactive. Over the years, I have observed what makes a good panel: good panelists, but also good knowledge to set up the flow, ask the right questions and, most importantly, make sure the panel provides both good information and entertainment for those attending. I have fortunately developed an ability to create a natural flow during my panel sessions, nudging, challenging, and offering some insights, but making sure that I don't compete with the panelists who I position as the heroes for the session. I "tee up" the session and challenge the attendees to think about how they can use what they have learned. And I asked the audience to show appreciation for the panelists for sharing their insights. Occasionally, someone comes up to me like they did in Barcelona and says, "I've attend the entire conference and this was by for the best led panel session." That is my most treasured reward. Here's a link to some of the photos I took during the conference. Enjoy! Written by: J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D. VP & Chief Analyst Mobile & Wireless Frost & Sullivan |

Ruby, Ruby on Rails, JRuby: is good for WHAT?
Deciding when to use any language--including Ruby--depends on the appropriateness to task and the amount of yak shaving necessary. Zed Shaw explains when Ruby's MRI or JRuby is the best language for the job, and when it really isn't.
the most important issues are, in short: What Ruby Makes Easy...and Hard- Systems scripting and automation
- Web programming, sometimes. Ruby on Rails
- Simplified APIs for nonexperts
- Gluing C APIs together
- Prototyping network protocols
- Web application testing
- Telephony applications
JRuby: First, the Pluses- Breathing new life into tired old Java APIs
- Gluing together Java libraries
- Rapid prototyping and experimentation
- Enterprise application integration
- Web programming but with the Java platform
- Swing or SWT GUI development
And on the Downside...
I don't recommend you use either JRuby or Ruby for - Large data crunching
- Image manipulation
- Heavy math or computation
- New language development
- E-mail processing
- Server protocols
- Enterprise deployments

Mica male, no?

Inside Mobile and Wireless: Networks Within Networks, by J. Gerry Purdy
Received via e-mail from J. Gerry Purdy, VP & Chief Analyst of Frost & Sullivan. Networks Within Networks March 2008 I recently had a briefing with an interesting wireless start-up: Strata8 Networks. I was introduced to the company via Tom Body, a friend who’s on the Board of the company. This company is the first of what I expect to be a number of companies that are developing what I call ‘networks within networks.’ This will become another new exciting growth area for wireless. Here’s why. Imagine for a minute that you’re building a nationwide wireless network. You put up cell towers in each major metropolitan area. The population you cover grows. You put up more cell towers in less populated areas. Eventually, you cover most of the United States with service for 250 to 300 million people. The number of people having cell phones grows as well with ‘penetration’ approaching 70%. (It’s over 100% in some areas where people have more than one cell phone.) Now imagine what happens when a cell phone becomes very pervasive and very convenient: many calls are made to people who are not very far away. In fact, in an office setting, most of the people using cell phones today are calling fellow employees in the same building or enterprise campus. In essence, more costly cell phone services have replaced the traditional, low-cost office phone. While there may be a phone sitting on the desk, most people just use their cell phones to make all of their calls because it’s so convenient. But most of us have walk outside or go next to a window in order to make a call inside a building. In this situation, it doesn’t make any sense to use the wireless operators’ entire back end infrastructure to support making a call to a person who might be just a few feet away. Instead, it would be more efficient if you could intercept the call with a local network that would then route it to the person nearby, thus saving time and money. Such a local network would also provide for good coverage throughout the entire organization. FedEx went through this same discovery: many packages they picked up in a major city high-rise office building were being set to another floor in the same building or to a location very close by. Instead of sending the package to Memphis on an airplane, FedEx now re-routes local packages directly to save both time and money. There are a number of ways in which the call could be intercepted and routed locally. One way would be to use dual mode cell phones that include Wi-Fi and have the local signal be a VoIP call (much like what’s done with Wi-Fi based phones operating on an enterprise PBX). The Unwired Mobile Access (UMA) standard is developing around this capability. But this takes dual mode handsets which are not yet widely manufactured, but will be in a few years, and uses unlicensed 802.11x spectrum. Another way to intercept and route local calls is to use a local cellular network that operates on the same frequency as the cellular provider, but has a much stronger signal and logic to intercept and re-route the call on the local network. It’s pretty easy to see that a company could build a ‘network within a network’ using a ‘Pico cell’ inside the enterprise campus in which they would allow users (typically in company setting) to use their cell phones inside the office environment. There would be great reception. Calls to other employees would stay within the enterprise. Calls would be on one common wireless network. This requires all employees to use a common wireless operator but, eventually, these services may support multiple operators’ networks. Costs would be reduced. Every enterprise is seeing telecommunications costs rise as employees make more of their business calls using their cell phones instead of the landline phone. The ‘network within network’ enables elimination of per minute pricing for calls made within the local network. The same benefits would accrue to data when employees wanted to receive email or get data off an enterprise server. An additional benefit is that these calls and data while on standard cell phones will remain within the enterprise firewall, leading to greater enterprise security, call routing control, and real time call detail reporting and analysis. Strata8 has just announced their first enterprise network that will provide ‘network within a network’ services. Their first wireless operator partner is Sprint. And their services will only operate today in the 16 US markets in which Strata8 has licensed spectrum, but that’s good enough for companies located entirely in one of these markets or with offices in these specific 16 regions. | | Eventually, Strata8 – and other vendors that will surely announce similar ‘network within network’ services – will support enterprises with multiple office locations using the Internet connect calls between offices. This allows employees to continue to make calls or download email just like they normally would. The ‘network within network’ (Net-in-Net) service does all the heavy lifting to manage the traffic, and saves the company money along the way. Someday, we’ll have multiple networks within networks across the entire US. It’s all about intelligent communications. We commend Strata8 Networks for leading the way in this exciting new arena of wireless communications. Written by: J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D. VP & Chief Analyst Mobile & Wireless Frost & Sullivan

Cross-media Publishing with MediaDepot: looking for partners in Italy!
Received via Mirko Cocco, a Milan-IN Member (still in the queue) MediaDepot© is the platform which enables companies and broadcasters to create, manage and exploit white label cross-media platforms. http://www.mediadepot.nl/
Currently, rich media and video are emerging on the internet. Development costs are very high as media management and automated video transcoding tools are tailor made. This is where MediaDepot© enters the stage. We offer all functionalities to create media portals and communities where users can create their own profile, upload media, comment to media, give ratings etc. We accept all kinds of media, we deliver to cellphones, iPod, internet, narrowcasting systems etc. Everything in, everything out. You define the settings and quality, MediaDepot© takes care of transcoding, (decentralized) distribution, play-out and archiving.
In most cases our clients prefer to work with web-developers of their own choice, so we have created an API in PHP to easily deploy media. If a client prefers to work in a different environment, there is also an XML layer available, created on top of the PHP API which will give him/her access to the media as well. the client can then use any environment that works with XML. On top of this XML layer, there is a second PHP API that enables remote servers to access the media in the client’s MediaDepot©. This way, the client can license content to third parties. They can display the media in their own branding. But the client’s MediaDepot© controls the traffic and owns the play-out statistics, even if the media is stored on the third party’s servers.
In The Netherlands MediaDepot© is used under license by national broadcasters, video production companies, commercial retailers, media distribution companies, charity organizations etc.
The MediaDepot© philosophy archers in controlled high quality play-out thru any thinkable screen, an easy to use management and editorial interface which gives you total control on metadata and distribution and complete independency of third party video encoding and / or play-out services.
To introduce MediaDepot© to the rest of Europe we is seeking strong partners and resellers particularly in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Sweden.
If you are interested, all information is available at http://www.mediadepot.nl/l=engels or contact us directly at info @ mediadepot.nl We speak Dutch, English, Italian

Inside Mobile and Wireless: iPhone Developer Program from Apple. by Gerry Purdy
Apple’s iPhone Developer Program Special Edition March 2008 When I wrote my Inside Mobile column titled “iPhone II: What I Hope it Will Do,” I pointed out that in order for Apple to become a major player in the cell phone market worldwide that they had to allow software developers to build applications for the iPhone. Yesterday, Apple announced the new developer program, called Software 2.0 Beat, for the iPhone that will officially go live in June. Here are the major points and my take on the announcement: -
Apple provides a Software Development Kit (SDK) that is available now for a small charge that provides development tools so that applications for the iPhone can be built and tested. The SDK includes an iPhone emulator and only runs on a Mac (meaning, if you want to develop for the iPhone, you have to do it on a Mac, which isn’t all bad since many developers us a Mac anyway). -
KPCB has designated $100 million for their iFund to help finance start ups that are interested in building applications for the iPhone (and iPod touch). -
All applications, once built, have to be submitted to Apple for approval. They will not approve those that invade privacy or contain pornography. -
Once approved, the application is placed on the App Store that is like an iTunes store but specifically for iPhone applications. -
Apple allows for enterprises to create private App Stores where applications internal to the organization are posted for distribution. -
Microsoft has licensed ActiveSync so the iPhone can work directly with the MS Exchange Server to enable the iPhone to work with corporate email and PIM synchronization where Exchange is installed. -
Cisco has licensed their Virtual Private Network (VPN) platform to allow secure access to enterprise servers. -
Apple takes 30% commission on all sales on the App Store. Here’s my take on the announcement. -
Lotus will build a client to support Domino/Notes. Lotus has the second largest number of corporate email users behind Microsoft, so Lotus will surely develop and launch a client for Domino/Notes, allowing the iPhone to operate as a secure client in this environment. -
The iFund is not going to have lower standards or investment criteria than any other venture fund. The iFund is still a venture fund like other ones, only focused on the iPhone ecosystem. A friend of mine, Matt Murphy, is the KPCB Partner charge of the fund. With my IDG Ventures affiliation, I look forward to co-funding a deal with them at some point. -
RIM should work out a license for their BlackBerry Connect program with Apple. This would be like the Microsoft ActiveSync license: iPhone users would have a BlackBerry client that would allow the iPhone to easily connect to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). After all, RIM makes a lot of money from selling BES. If a company wants to use the iPhone but have BlackBerry already adopted, then this would make it easy for the enterprise to simply add the iPhone along side their already deployed BlackBerry units. -
Since BlackBerry itself is not an email server but, rather, a conduit to other backend systems, this might be a clever way to allow iPhones to get access to not only Lotus Notes but Novel Groupwise, the third largest email & PIM system. -
Apple’s announcement is great for Google since most of the Google services are outside of Android. Google’s maps will become part of many applications and Google search will be embedded in a number of apps as well. -
This will set up a wonderful war in the marketplace between Google re: Android, Apple re: iPhone, Symbian re: Symbian OS, and Microsoft re: Windows Mobile. -
Although the program is very iPhones-oriented, most applications should work on the iPod touch. Overall, this is a very well thought-out announcement. While not completely ‘open’ (where anyone could develop an application and publish it), it won’t prevent any reasonable and honest application from being made available to all iPhone users. It’s a solid ecosystem that should end up producing tens of thousands of applications for the iPhone environment. One interesting byproduct of the development of new applications is the need to make the menu system hierarchical and adaptable so that as users download additional applications, there’s a way to group them and easily find them. “Where does the application go when it’s downloaded?” will have to be well thought out. The new iPhone application development process is more of Apple maintaining direct control over their ecosystem. Even though they are a ‘walled garden,’ they are making it easy for anyone to play and enjoy the garden and its playground.

What is social spam, what is not? the case of Spock
Dear Spock supporter,
please help us in defining what IS Social Spam in the case of Spock and what's just "funny"/ "useless", or "fake" tagging. Then, is "fake tagging" also maybe a "half social spam"? :) and lots of other interesting questions- let's talk in P2P on the forum of Spock Fan Club 2.0?
"again what is spam, what is not ?" http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=19789337936&topic=4404
thank you. Andrey Golub- a Spock Evangelist and Blogger
