The new research- “Mobile Content Platforms: Mobile 2.0 and Advertising Join the Party" by MultiMedia Intelligence

Mobile Content Platform Market Reaches $3.4 Billion, Up Almost 20% But Short of Expectations

The market for premium mobile content platforms grew almost 20% in 2007, resulting in a $3.4 billion share of the $18.5 billion of revenue generated by the mobile premium content market, according to recent research by MultiMedia Intelligence.  As cellular subscribers worldwide increasingly look for personalization and enhanced entertainment content on their mobile handsets, subscribers are continuing to purchase more premium content, such as ringtones, music, mobile games and video.  Mobile content platform companies such as Alcatel-Lucent, Amdocs, Ericsson, Motricity NMS Communications and Qualcomm provide key systems and tools to in-take, catalog, store, and deliver content.

Many industries would be thrilled with 20% growth.  While  the mobile content platform and digital commerce services companies find it disappointing, much of the issue is out of their hands.  The ringtone market is softening while other content categories are failing to live-up to expectations.  Additionally, the mobile content platform and digital commerce services companies sit in the mobile content ecosystem stuck between the more powerful operators and content owners.  The operators have tremendous power as they own the subscriber.  The content companies have power as they own the content that individuals want. The revenue distribution among the different industry segments reflects this power imbalance.

MultiMedia Intelligence’s new research also found:

  • Digital commerce services market was not quite as strong as the content platform market. Mobile digital commerce service companies provide the financial systems underlying the commerce transaction process.  The recent MMI research found that the digital commerce segment, comprised of companies like Amdocs, Bango, Comverse and Valista grew at slightly less than 10%.
  • The transition to an off-deck dominated content market is developing in North America.  However, a stronger transition is stymied as the mobile content discovery and purchase process is still too challenging to consumers.
  • Questionable and unprofessional market activity by some off-deck providers is drawing the ire of carriers such as Sprint Nextel, which recently enacted strict guidelines and is enforcing them with penalties for content partners. MultiMedia Intelligence sees other carriers following suit, not only in the US but in Europe as well, in hopes of cleaning up rogue off-deck providers.
  • The market will begin to see the emergence of advertising in premium content.  Video will be the dominant driver, yet other content types will see growth as well.
  • Mobile music is still dominated by ringtones; however the growth of the category is muted as the decline of polyphonic ringtones eats away at the gains made by music ringtunes.  Ringtones will remain the dominant music category through out the forecast period, despite strong growth in full track downloads, streaming music and ringback tones.

The research, “Mobile Content Platforms: Mobile 2.0 and Advertising Join the Party” covers the software platforms used to deliver & monetize content to mobile handsets. The research contains five-year worldwide forecasts of global market revenue for video, music, gaming and images. The forecast for the emerging category of advertising in premium is included.  The report also presents market share in these areas for mobile operators, content providers and content-enablement companies. The report provides a further breakdown of revenue share for the content-enablement companies by revenue share of music including ringtone, ringtune, ringback, over-the-air full music track download, streaming music revenue by region. The report also contains profiles of major mobile content enablement platform companies and trends and predictions for the industry.

Market Forecasts
  • Mobile premium content revenue by geography for Mono and Polyphonic Ringtones, Music Ringtones, Music Ringback Tones, Music Full Track Downloads, Music Streaming, Mobile Games, Adult Content, Graphics, Mobile TV, and Mobile Video
  • Advertising Revenue in Premium Mobile Video, with segmentation for Agency, Ad Network, Ad Server and Technology, and Content Providers
  • Mobile TV Advertising Market Revenue
  • On-Deck and Off-Deck content revenue by geography and content types
  • Revenue share by content type for Content Providers, Operators, Digital Commerce Services Providers and Platform Companies
  • Company profiles of 130 market participants
  • Market trends and analysis
Price $3,495.00

Q&A on LinkedIn: How to Define KPIs for Corporate IT services?

I was recently asking this question on LinkedIn Q&A:

How to Define KPIs for Corporate IT services?

and the Best Answer I selected, was:

I would suggest that your first step would be establish a "service catalogue" which is a list of what services you (the IT dept) provide to the rest of the organization. The key here is to not make this a list of technical components (e.g. mail server, web server), but a description of what the user expects to get.

For example: to a user, email services would be the ability to send and receive email with: a)spam filtering, b)proof of receipt, c)ability to create mailing lists, etc., but NOT the ability to perform mass marketing email campaigns (that would be another service) - the email service will likely include several servers, different software packages, internet connectivity, and more.

Once the service is well defined from the point of view of customer expectations and IT restrictions (e.g. no email campaigns) it would very important to get get the agreement and buy-in on these definitions from the rest of the organization. I would recommend a series of one on one discussions with each senior executive, followed by a group meeting that you could call the IT Steering Group or Committee, where they would all see each other agreeing to what they already agreed to in private.

If there is resistance to forming a steering group, try the argument that they already spend hours every week dealing with IT issues and that spending one hour in this meeting to get organized will cut down on the time spent firefighting.

The reason why the one on one meeting are very important is because your senior execs will have lots of questions/debate. If you get into it with all of them around the table your meeting will go out of control, and you will not achieve agreement to full service catalogue in the time you have allocated - this will make you look bad and disorganized.

You need to be able to argue your case, and where necessary to capitulate and make a change to service definition, as well as identify which executive disagree on fundamental points. Where this happens, you bring two alternatives to the Steering Group, and ask for decision.

You also ask the steering group to assign a rank of importance to each service. You do this by handing out a questionnaire where each service is listed, and they have a "budget" of $100. They must allocate their $100 budget amongst the different services. This will help you all year long but especially at the end of the fiscal year during budgeting.

Then you write SLA's.

I recommend that your SLAs be composed of 5 points:

-Service description (from the service catalogue)

-Availability (how much of the time the users expect to be able to use the service. 24/7? 24/7 with 5 hour maintenance on Sunday? The last 5 business days before month end?

-Remediation time (when the service becomes unavailable, what is an acceptable time to restore it? 1 day? 1 hour?

-Measurement (how will availability be measured? Server uptime? pings from external location? manual login every 4 hours?

-Reporting (how will IT report on all of the above? daily, weekly? include sample reports)

Once this is done, you will have very concrete measurements of you performance.

If you want to go further, investigate ITIL, create a configuration database and a change management process (see ITIL). I also highly recommend the McKinley Airport Simulation exercise from the Microsoft Operating Framework training as an introduction to why ITIL is important, and how it can help.

An open letter to Adam Ostrow, Mashable blogger, about Beemood

I know, nothing in this world could be perfect... Even mashable.com :), the #1 Blog about Social Networking/ Web 2.0. I am the great fan of mashable and also Pete's contact "everywhere" on web 2.0 :), but this time I had to disagree with mashable and doubt the quality of the research behind one of their articles, this one-

BeeMood: A Blatant Twitter Clone for Italy

http://mashable.com/2008/01/03/beemood/ by Adam Ostrow

I left there a comment although it wasn't easy to express my point of view in a few chars (since mashable doesn't support middle/long comments). So here I'll publish what I was going to say, the full post which it cut on the web:

Dear Adam,

Hello from another mashable fan and follower, and Social Technology so-called evangelist :). We cross time to time- I follow actively Spock people search engine 2.0 as community evangelist for Italy, and Italian LinkedIn supporter Club as VP and Web 2.0 Manager.

God wanted so I now work for the company that owns BeeMood brand and develops its future services (Zero9 Spa., http://www.zero9group.com/). Trust me this doesn't affect my clear mind in judging BeeMood :) Plus here I could meet the people behind this idea/ product/ service.

so my quick comments would be:

1) Let's please not mix MicroBlogging and Twitter.com.

Twitter isn't equal to MicroBlogging. Twitter is A PRODUCT implementing MicroBlogging. Microblogging in general is a Web 2.0 idea for a service that could be implemented in one or another way, and twitter.com has just become very popular/ famous and we're all happy about it and use it every day! :)

btw, Do you know another way for implementing microblogging to not "be similar in some way to twitter.com"? let us know if it's so! :)

2) BeeMood was launched by a Mobile 2.0 company, so it was built with Mobile/ Mobile 2.0 ideas in mind.

BeeMood's mobile vision is not the same as the mobile- connection of Twitter which is just to send some updates via SMS. Instead, Beemood it was designed to be oriented on Mobile Users.

Product roadmap for BeeMood includes tons of interesting features that have nothing to deal anymore with twitter.com's base services (implemented very well, but it's very basic!), but to fully implement Mobile MicroBlogging and Mobile Sharing.

3) as you mention in your article, BeeMood integrates also twitter's updates inside and some other 2.0 things (via RSS). So it's an Integrated Mobile MicroBlogging 2.0 service, and we know integrating always mean "something more that what's integrated inside", right?

4) next, BeeMood is not just "targeting Italy" as you write. It was developed and launched in Italy, since the headquarters of Zero9 are in Milan. But take a look at the location map for Zero9 worldwide and it will become clearer I believe.

  • So, I am sorry Adam with all respect to mashable.com, I can't stand the statement as "just about as straight-up a Twitter clone" in the very first row of your review!

And you may also find BeeMood Blog useful to understand better this product. it's in English btw :) http://blog.beemood.com/.

P.S. feel free contacting me or David Casalini BeeMood manager for any questions you may have!

Long life to Skype?... or The Telco Skype Killer!

Incumbents would offer a VoIP client that will work on incumbent broadband and 3G wireless pipes, using a backend to allow people to make free phone calls to anyone logged into it, similar to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and Google.

Calls from client-to-client would be free, and the backend platform would keep “calls” (data streams) from the participating carriers free. Termination charges would be avoiding, but each carrier could still make money when calls S****-Out to a rival’s phone or wireless network. A common platform and client means everyone gains in lower support costs and simplicity, rather than having 15 different standards

Maybe another way to think of this is this would be the VSTN (VoIP standard telephone network) to the PSTN.

Anyway, the crystal ball says Skype-Killer will be launched in 2009, run on broadband connections and on top of 3G/4G wireless connections (which are, after all, broadband), extended to other mobile phones eventually, and be used as a hook to sell other services such as video.

Why are telcos prepared to eat their own young, so to speak? Voice is a losing proposition and they continue to lose fixed-line customers at a rapid clip. Providing VSTN gives them a way to retain customers, rather than letting them skip off to cable, an independent VoIP service, or a rival’s wireless service.

- Read the GigaOm post on the:

Telecom Skype Killer

http://gigaom.com/2008/05/06/global-telcos-plotting-a-skype-rival/

Here are some key points about this yet-unnamed proposed Skype killer:

  • To be launched in 2009.
  • The concept will be extended to mobile phones eventually.
  • The service would run on the carrier broadband connection, and also on top of the 3G/4G wireless broadband pipe.
  • The service will be used as a lure for selling other services such as video.
  • The incumbent consortium partners can brand this service any way they want.

Social Networking Going Mobile- the Nielsen study

More than 4 million U.S. wireless subscribers--1.6 percent of the total U.S. mobile consumer population--now access social networks via mobile device, according to a new study released by media research firm The Nielsen Company.

Nielsen finds the U.K. leads Europe in mobile social networking percentage, with 1.7 percent of British mobile subscribers (roughly 810,000 of all subs) visiting social communities during the first quarter of 2008. By comparison, only 0.8 percent of Spanish wireless subs (291,000 consumers) access social networks via the mobile web, followed by Italy at 0.6 percent (293,000 subscribers), France at 0.6 percent (255,000 subs) and Germany at just 0.2 percent (141,000 subs).

Attorno a lui terra bruciata, viene perfino picchiato.

Social Technographics of Forrester: Many companies approach Social Computing as a list of technologies...

Forrester research

Mapping Participation In Activities Forms The Foundation Of A Social Strategy

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

  • Many companies approach Social Computing as a list of technologies to be deployed as needed — a blog here, a podcast there — to achieve a marketing goal. But a more coherent approach is to start with your target audience and determine what kind of relationship you want to build with them, based on what they are ready for. Forrester categorizes Social Computing behaviors into a ladder with six levels of participation; we use the term Social Technographics® to describe a population according to its participation in these levels. Brands, Web sites, and any other companies pursuing social technologies should analyze their customers' Social Technographics first and then create a social strategy based on this profile.
