Nel 2004, Nokia creò il concept di un piccolo smart phone dotato di touch screen che, a vederlo oggi, assomiglia in modo inquietante all’iPhone di Apple. Niente da fare per allora, Steve Jobs seppe, come sempre, osare e anticipare i tempi e, anche se non è stato il primo cronologicamentre ad avere l’idea, è stato di sicuro colui che l’ha messa in pratica con successo, ed è questo che conta alla fine della fiera.
Massimiliano Bucciol, in un post del suo blog, osserva come, “dal punto di vista dei terminali touch screen Nokia è indiscutibilmente rimasta un po’ indietro rispetto ai diretti concorrenti.” Mancanza di lungimiranza o di “vision”, come amano dire negli States? Che senso ha anticipare nientepopodimeno che Apple, e lasciare un progetto così interessante in un cassetto?
Ma il colosso finlandese non si è arreso e ci vuole riprovare. Negli scorsi giorni Nokia ha presentato un concept design del cellulare Morph, come sarà nel 2012.Blogosfere ha già dedicato ampio spazio a questa tecnologia emergente, che Nokia aveva già presentato lo scorso Febbraio. I presupposti lasciano immaginare che si possa ripetere una situazione simile a quella del 2004, ma ora sta a Nokia non lasciarsi scappare l’occasione. E, visti i tempi di magra che corrono, non è certo il momento giusto per dormirci sopra.
Se Morph diventerà realtà, questo vuol dire che i cellulari del futuro saranno trasparenti, trasformabili e universali.

That's all very relative, who is late and who wins. Also some people don't buy the touch screen mambo jambo. Many still prefer buttons.

First of all:
in my full post I specified that the morph concept was launched last February. In the "scorsi giorni" (namely of November 10th, during the MEMS Industry Group annual conference in Monterey, California) more details on the technology have been added. This was only the pretext to comment about Nokia's decision not to introduce touchscreen models, in spite of the fact that they had the technology much before than glamorous Apple did. It's true, many still prefer buttons, but will it last forever? The same is happening with x-by-wire systems replacing mechanical steers, brakes and gears in cars. Many stiull prefer old mechanical ones that are "perceived" as safer and more robust. But it's very likely that in the next few years all new car models will have x-by-wire systems inside, like in airplanes. And many companies are deeply investing in new touchscreen tecnologies non only for displays, but also to replace old, mechanical keyboards in mobile terminals as well as in PCs.
