May 22, 1990: Microsoft Opens a New Window on the World

from WIRED ( wired.com ) / wikipedia.

1990: Microsoft releases Windows 3.0.

The third complete revamp of the Windows operating system was the breakthrough edition, the one that helped Microsoft compete with, and eventually overtake, the Mac OS.

Windows 3.0 was also the OS that, at least on the surface, moved Microsoft away from its DOS-based heritage and gave the customer a relatively navigable user interface. It was also capable of some basic multitasking, although compatibility problems arose with regard to most games and other entertainment software.

The new operating system's outstanding feature, however, was the Control Panel, which looked very familiar to users of the Mac OS. That did not go unnoticed in Cupertino, California.

Apple filed suit, claiming that Bill Gates and the boys had basically ripped off its operating system. (Gates had been shown an early version of Apple's OS in 1981 by no less than Steve Jobs, when the two visionaries were still playing nice.) But a federal judge threw out all but nine of the 189 charges filed in that suit, leaving Microsoft basically free to become the Redmond Monolith.

We all know the rest of the story....
It's intresting that, after  years  , the  story  repeat  itself,  but, with  other  "actors" , MS and GNU/linux, with MS triing to sue the entire Linux World , for patent violations and so...

Otherwise, vista look to be directly (but with bad copy)  ripped form Apple MacosX , ( another time?? ) ....

In this way i prefer to take the "third" way, called Linux. so.. came on.. “Resistance is futile

  1. It's the chain-reaction effect. It would be nice to see Linux so well accepted by the Consumer as Windows today :)

    as it's said:

  2. Ho appena ricevuto una newsletter da "IT Business Edge". Cosa dice? :)

Linux Laughs at Microsoft's Patent Infringement Threats!
    - Microsoft says Linux violates its IP and someone will pay. Linux enthusiasts say Microsoft is spreading FUD to slow migration from Windows to Linux. No matter who's right, the market will be affected.

Microsoft Patents Linux Impact: Red Hat vs. Novell
    - Too bad Microsoft has never met subtlety. Its positioning on patent infringement will noticeably affect the market. It showcases pre-SCO thinking, and it likely has unintended consequences which are counter to Microsoft's strategy. Who will "win"? Both Novell and Red Hat — each in different ways. And OpenOffice may suffer most.
