asterisk with skype

Big news, really big this time. The company that leads the proprietary VoIP is opening the doors gates for the standards. Predictably  you have to pay for entrance. Ironically, they do it with the company leading the open VoIP, Digium:

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AstriCon 2008)—September 25, 2008Digium®,
creator and primary developer of Asterisk®, the leading open source
telephony platform, and Skype™, the leading global Internet
communications company, today announced the beta version of Skype For
Asterisk, which will allow the integration of Skype functionality into
Digium’s Asterisk software and enable customers to make, receive and
transfer Skype calls from within their Asterisk phone systems.

Good? Has to be good somehow. Not impressed. We’ll see.

Keywords: asterisk, skype, VoIP, digium

  1. WoW, it's such a wise move from the part of Skype!
I thought skype will die soon (if they followed their stupid approach of "closed" service), instead it's gonna live forever now?

  2. the world of telecommunications is changing, skype doesn't want to die. Opening their network started a couple of years ago with proprietary solutions ( like agreement with h3g ). And that was predictable, they have to integrate with the rest. What they've done is to allow SMB call centres and secretaries to be skyped without being in front of computer or buying special hardware. Not "wise" just logical.

  3. it's VERY WISE move for Skype, although you prefer calling it "logical". not all "logical" is wise, and not every wise solution is "logical"

  4. Hmhm, not being a native speaker I will not claim the difference but here is what wikipedia advices:

Wisdom is having gained knowledge, understanding, experience, discretion, and intuitive understanding, along with a capacity to apply these qualities well.

so you may be right and it is a wise decision ;)
